Steve just rolled his eyes, smiling as he shook his head, "Yeah, cause I was a scrawny little thing, and we didn't do much playin' through high school."
Steve just rolled his eyes, smiling as he shook his head, "Yeah, cause I was a scrawny little thing, and we didn't do much playin' through high school."
"You were always scrawny." Bucky's eyes ran up and down Steve's body in a strange way, and he bit his lower lip just a little bit. "Well. Not any more, I guess."
"No, not anymore," Steve shrugged shyly, looking at the ground. He still remembered Bucky's gaze over him when he first saw him after the serum, slow-talking and delirious. "–That changed, so now I can chase ya' down without going into a coughing fit."
Bucky rubbed the back of his neck with a hand, letting out a breath. "Mm." he replied, nodding. "But I'll still beat you." he looked at Steve.
"Oh yeah?" Steve mused, raising an eyebrow teasingly, "What makes you think so?"
"Because. It's a fact." Bucky replied, grimacing a little bit as he looked over at Steve.
"So that's it, then?" Steve said with a faint laugh, "I'll just take your word for it?"
"Yes." Bucky replied, finishing his quiche and looking at Steve with a faint smirk. "You just take my word for it."
Steve looked down, stupidly smiling to himself, "You're ridiculous, you know that?"
Bucky raised an eyebrow. "No, I'm not ridiculous. I'm just right." he replied, looking at Steve.
"I was kidding– but sure, okay." Steve shrugged lightly, wondering where Bucky's sudden seriousness had come from.
Bucky took a deep breath, shaking his head a little bit as he looked around the party.
"I'm gonna…go find Tony," Steve said, biting his lip as he awkwardly excused himself. What happened? He'd been holding his hands only a moment before, but as soon as they starting talking about strength and– oh, why can't I just talk like a normal person?
Bucky looked up. "Hm? Oh. Okay." He replied softly. "Good luck." He gave a faint smile, looking out at the party again.
Steve waded through the crowd of sharply-dressed partygoers, smiling politely as he passed them. He wanted to talk to Tony…but about what? How could he tell him about his thoughts and feelings without revealing his conflicted feelings for Bucky? This isn't the time, He scolded himself as he neared a small crowd of thoughtful-looking businessmen surrounding the owner of his favourite condescending voice.
Tony was blabbering on about something or other, about how of course they could manage without SHIELD, of course the Avengers were still a team, what else could they be? Of course Bucky was welcome to be a part of it if he so desired.
Steve put on his best 'Captain America' smile and greeted the people surrounding, shaking a few hands and greeting them with polite remarks. Their expressions were near unreadable, and Steve wasn't sure if he was imposing or saving Tony from their company.
Tony looked at Steve with a quick smile. "Thanks, Steve." He said quietly, smiling a little bit. "I've been having to pull shit outta my ass."
Steve let out a startled laugh, shaking his head, "Sure. Was it really that bad?" He smiled lightheartedly, "I thought you liked talking."
Tony flared his eyes a little bit. "I do! But I haven't had a chance to talk about all this stuff with the others yet, so." He shook his head a little bit.
"Hm," Steve said with a slow nod, smiling as he glanced back at the group of people, "But what stuff do you need to talk about?"
"Us. The Avengers. What we're going to be doing with SHIELD gone. Shit like that." Tony replied, shaking his head.
"Mmhm." Steve nodded slowly again, "Right. The Avengers." He let out a sigh, 'cause this never ends. This would undoubtedly be a bad time to discuss taking a short break to be there for Bucky.
Tony looked at Steve carefully. "Something wrong?" he asked. "You look…i don't know. Is there anything bothering you?"
Steve pursed his lips, looking to the side. "I don't know…" He sighed, "I don't think we should talk about it here and now but…yeah."
