Aspen looked behind them, to see Tohru's face covered in blood, she gave him a single nod, looking back forward and then looking down, her hip had started bleeding again, the source of the reopened wound unknown, she saw her pants were soaked in blood, but she looked back up. "Can you turn if you get scratched?" she asked loudly, to no one in particular, her voice trembling.
The three siblings all shook their heads. “Only if you’re bitten…why?” Bean asked, worried sick about Aspen. She didn’t want anyone to get hurt. She would’ve rushed over to Aspen but she was keeping Lilac steady. Lilac had her wound open for a while so a lot of blood had been lost.
Aspen shook her head "you said someone got scratched, I was just worried." She stated, sighing in relief, her eyes continuing to dart around.
"Um… actually…" Lis piped up, "You could theoretically get it if you had an open wound and zombie saliva got in. It's not so different from rabies. But that said, from what I understand, anything besides bites is incredibly rare. You should be fine."
She reached into her bag to grab a few supplies, including painkillers for Kas.
"You guys said something about an abandoned hospital… I think we'd benefit from raiding that pharmacy, if it's not empty already."
Tohru skirted around the edge of the group, still holding his sleeve up to his face. He was still silent, but his eyes were glazed over with worry. His face was telling.
After handing Lilac and Mori to Aspen, Bean walked over to Tohru. “H-Hey, are you okay?” she asked, worried about him as she tried to move his sleeve. When she saw how bloody he had been, she had told herself to check on him.
Aspen did the same, she leaned over to Tohru and whispered "maybe you should take a minute or two to get yourself cleaned up too" while swinging the end of her bat against her shoe, listening to the thud, thud, thud sound it made.
"I'm fine," Tohru rasped, "I took care of my wounds, I'm just shaken."
He pressed the sleeve back up to the wound.
"I don't really have anything else to stop the bleeding here. Can't bandage it with what I have," he admitted, "I'll clean up more once we're sheltered again."
Bean nodded before heading back to Lilac and Mori. “Okay…” she muttered as Lilac whimpered in pain. Bean wanted to pass Mori onto either Aspen or Lis but the younger girl was holding onto the kid tightly.
Aspen pulled her backpack off her shoulder, and zipped it open, pulling out Gauze and bandages. "You can have these, if they'll help" she said, offering the supplies to him, with a soft smile.
"Oh, thanks," Tohru replied, taking the gauze, but leaving the bandages.
He switched to holding the gauze to his face instead of his sleeve.
"That was too close…" he murmured.
"tell me about it."
Aspen sighed warily, she rubbed her fist across her sweaty forehead
"I feel like my arms are about to fall off, I swung so hard." She stated quietly, shifting from one foot to the other,
"I can only imagine how tired you are, you're like their leader" she said softly, resting her hands on her knees
Bean turned to Aspen. “Hey, can you pass me some too? I need to patch Lilac’s wound,” she asked, holding onto her sister and Mori tightly. The scratch wasn’t too bad but it definitely hurt like hell for Lilac.
Kas closed his eyes and rested his head against Luka's shoulder, looking a bit woozy and out of it. His face was pale, and his arm hadn't quite stopped bleeding yet. "How far away is it…?" He asked weakly.
Aspen nodded, handing her the bandage.
“I don’t know…wish I did though,” Luka sighed as he tried to help stop the bleeding. Seeing the blood and how pale Kas was wasn’t helping Luka’s emotional state but he pushed his problems away. Kas needed him right now. The young Rose boy’s turmoil was just going to have to wait. Bean took the bandage and started patching her sister’s wound up. Lilac winced when Bean touched the scratch but didn’t make any more noise.
(two pages with out me smh /j)
Levi stalked along behind the group, turning around to watch their backs every so often. He hadn't received any major injuries, only scrapes and grazes, and he'd managed to hit himself upside the head with his own staff, but no one had saw and he wasn't going to tell them. It was embarrassing.
Rachel hung at the back of the group with her brother mulling over what had happened.
"You don't think that…the zombies evolved, do you? But that wouldn't make sense. It would take millions of years for that to happen. Right?" She continued to yammer on about how it didn't make any sense.
Earl tuned her out after a while. This had happened a lot while they were on their own, hunting. How she thought the animal patterns were interesting and different. It didn't matter to him.
The world ended. No laws. They needed food. Bang.
That was the only thing that mattered.
"Animals take a long time to evolve, sure," Lis agreed, "But viruses evolve quickly. And that's what this is. A virus."
Tohru frowned.
"So… in other words, a new variant has come out that doesn't affect the eyes' sensitivity to light as much?"
"Bingo. And not all zombies are going to be able to come out into the light still. Just some of them."
Tohru fell back, walking alongside Levi.
"Well… that's not good, either way."
After Bean finished patching Lilac up, she sighed as her sister leaned against her. “We need to find shelter soon…the younger ones will get tired if we stay out too long,” Bean told the others, gesturing to Lilac who was exhausted. Luka nodded, holding onto Kas as he looked around for any shelter close enough for them to reach.
Kas closed his eyes and shifted so he was more comfortable, his face still very pale. "Mmmm…" Mori looked up a bit, trembling violently. His heart was racing, and he didn't seem to be fully processing what was happening.
Luka leaned Kas against the rock and went searching through his bag for some water. Once he found a canteen, he handed it to Kas. “Drink up. You’ll need it…” he told him, sitting next to him. Lilac finally calmed down a little as she held Mori close to her. She rested her hand on his head softly.
Kas looked up at Luka, his vision a bit blurry. He accepted the water and drank a bit of it, sighing softly. "We need to find… some actual shelter. We can't stay out in the woods like this. Not… not safe…"
“I know…I know…just hang in there. Get some rest while we figure out what to do,” Luka told him, trying to reassure him. “You look exhausted…” he added, worried about Kas. “When we’re ready to go, I’ll let you know,” he smiled a little before leaning back. How much longer were they going to suffer like this? How much longer until they can sleep peacefully without worrying if they were going to die? He really wanted answers…he was tired of this.
