Despite himself, Kyle leaned into Marius's hand a little, "A long time ago, yes. But not anymore. He's a… work colleague now." He admitted, sighing through his nose however painful.
Despite himself, Kyle leaned into Marius's hand a little, "A long time ago, yes. But not anymore. He's a… work colleague now." He admitted, sighing through his nose however painful.
“He’s still abusing you,” Marius insisted softly, pulling away. “Why? What’s your work?”
Kyle shook his head, "I- I can't tell you," He whispered, "I'm sorry…"
Something illegal, then. Marius exhaled, biting his lip. This was good— the fact that his brain had begun to function, the fact that he was thinking. But Kyle was being hurt, that was bad. “Don’t apologize. Honestly- it’s fine.”
"Marius," Kyle swallowed, "If you ever see Jason on campus, you turn and walk the other way, okay?" He was dangerous, as were all of his colleagues but Jason especially, "I don't want you hurt so you stay away from him."
Does he deal drugs? Marius wondered absently, giving Kyle a sad and searching look. "How would he know to look for me? I'm not- I'm not going to try anything- anything stupid."
"I know but if he ever sees you with me he might go after you and-" Kyle stopped himself from thinking too far into it, "All I'm asking is you stay away from him, please?"
Marius gave a small nod, brows drawing together. A worried light entered his eyes, one intended for Kyle. "Why does- Why does he want to hurt you?"
Kyle sighed and shrugged a shoulder, "Because he's a bad man and- and doesn't like that I'm favored more then him."
"More… favoured?" If he was being honest, Marius was glad for the distraction, the opportunity for his mind to be engaged, though the circumstances were awful. "Where?"
"Work. Our… Boss prefers me over him and he's always had anger issues so I became his punching bag." Kyle explained, rubbing at the back of his neck.
"And do you punch back?" Marius was whispering by now, arms wrapped around his stomach.
Kyle shook his head, "No. I don't. I've learnt from experience, hitting him back makes everything worse."
"And your.. Boss, they don't care?" Marius frowned slightly. Who on earth did Kyle work for?
"Yeah. As long as we get the work done he doesn't care what we do." Kyle looked down at the floor, knowing how bad everything sounded when he said it out loud.
Marius was silent for a minute or two. "Then why do you work for him?"
"Because I owe him," Kyle muttered, "And if I leave…" He shook his head.
What on Earth… It sounded painfully as if Kyle was in some sort of crime syndicate. “Why do you owe— Shit, I’m sorry- I’m asking too many personal questions.”
"No, no it's fine," Kyle gave Marius a small, slightly strained smile, "My boss got me out of a tight situation a few years ago and- and he payed for me to come to here so…" He shrugged, "I'm repaying a debt."
Marius nodded wordlessly, withdrawing into himself once more. Had he crossed a line? Been too intrusive? Forced Kyle to say too much?
I'm such an idiot…
Kyle sighed and gave Marius a small smile, "Hey, I don't care that you asked. It kinda felt nice to open up to someone for the first time in… a long time."
Once again, Marius nodded. “Alright. That’s something, I guess.”
"Yup. Should we get back to those dishes before we're rudely interrupted again?" Kyle asked, raising a brow with the same smile.
"Sure," he returned, the corner of his lip twitching upwards.
Kyle's smile grew when he noticed Marius's almost smile and he hummed happily because of it, "Teamwork for the win."
