Aurelius left Nox waiting outside, walked into the building, and requested to see the Elder Council. The man sitting near the entrance laughed.
"What do you want, child? Coming in with another one of your hunches or doomsday prophecies?" he asked mockingly.
Aurelius bared his teeth. "Not mine. My dragon's. And they truly can see snippets of the future. Look. If our village gets destroyed, and no one is warned, it's your fault."
The man sighed and let Aurelius enter a back room where the council sat, sharing stories over a cup of tea. Aurelius bowed deeply, unhooking his sword and laying it down in front of him.
"Elders, I come with an ill-foreboding prophecy, of sorts. My dragon, Nox, had a dream, which, as all of you know, is rather unusual for a dragon. She says that in her dream she saw this village being destroyed, and dragons killed. If that does not suggest impending doom, then I'm not sure what does."
A few of them laughed.
"Like you haven't led us astray before! You constantly speak of doom and destruction, but look at us! We've been fine all these years," a woman cried out.
Aurelius rolled his eyes. "How short-sighted of you. You may be the elders, but just because you've lived longer doesn't mean you can knock down the ideas and legitimate concerns of those younger than you. Just because someone predicts the future or guessed what could happen next doesn't make it the near future, and just because it isn't the near future doesn't mean you shouldn't prepare. You've seen what's happening. You've heard what those who have been on patrol say, and you know of the tensions. You can't keep ignoring this problem, especially not now that a dragon has made the prediction that something bad is going to happen."
"Aurelius, you are every bit as paranoid as your parents and that sister of yours were. Go home and do something productive."
"You're wrong!" Aurelius snapped, "Don't bring my family into this!"
"All in favor of hearing him out?"
One elder raised her hand, but all of the others gave him varying stares of disapproval.
"You are dismissed."
"When your people are dying, they're going to pin it all back on you if you make it through the carnage," Aurelius told them, "I hope you see the error of your thinking before it's too late to save your people."
He took his sword back up, then walked out, his head lifted high and his shoulders back. Aurelius could not afford to show how he really felt in front of them. He left the building and came upon Nox, who asked how everything went.
"I don't wish to talk about it," he muttered, stroking her neck so that he could calm himself.
