"That does not equal grandpa," Kye put on a mock straight face. A smile showing underneath it. "Hey, off topic, but would you like to learn how I do the whole voice changing slash throwing that I did earlier?"
"That does not equal grandpa," Kye put on a mock straight face. A smile showing underneath it. "Hey, off topic, but would you like to learn how I do the whole voice changing slash throwing that I did earlier?"
“Old enough for me,” she said. Then, she grinned slightly. “Yes, please. I hate not knowing more than the people I’m supposed to be helping on quests.”
"It's quite simple actually. You just have to know the way the walls bend and where the changes are. That just takes practice maneuvering in the dark to know how the cave looks based on how it sounds," he explained. "And you already know how an echo works. Pretty much all you want and need to do, is make your echo louder than you. And that takes a long time to do."
“How do you do that?” Hunter tilted her head. “Just by memorizing the formation of the caves?”
(Because I don't actually know we're gonna do this…)
Kye began explaining in depth how he did it and gave a few examples. He let her try it a few times as they continued back.
(Lol yeah …)
Hunter was fascinated. Not that she would ever admit it. She listened intently, and even tried it a few times, but with no success.
They neared the cliff that Kye had pulled them down. He looked up it and smiled. "Sometimes I really should think things all the way through before I do them. Any ideas on how to get up?"
Hunter smirked slightly. “A few.”
She flicked the wall, and a decent-sized handhold made itself. “Follow me.”
Kye didn't question it and quietly followed her.
Hunter made cracks in the wall all along the way to the top. Sometimes it took her a while, and she had to lean back precariously, looking at the cliff from an angle, before making a new handhold.
Kye followed carefully, each movement clean and methodical. At one point he glanced back down to see how far they'd gotten. By now all he could see was a black nothingness under them.
Finally, they got to the top. Hunter, panting hard but trying to hide it, shook out her arms and blinked rapidly.
Pulling himself up, Kye took a small breath. He walked back towards Order's home so they could start making a plan. He came to a sudden stop and looked up to a dark ledge a good ways from them.
Hunter was glad that he didn’t ask how she did that. She had shown too much of herself. She needed to be more careful. When he stopped, she turned. “What?”
Kye watched the spot for a moment. Did you hear that?
Yes, but I don't think it was anything. He shook his head after a moment. "Nothing, let's go."
Hunter shrugged. “Let’s go. The sooner I’m out of this place, the better.” She seemed crankier now, and more angry and bitter. She glanced around. “I hate this place,” she whispered quietly.
Kye couldn't help but feel a stab of disappointment at her words. He'd hoped that maybe he could change her view by showing her another side to caves, but he understood what bad memories could do to someone. And he wasn't going to force anyone to change their mind, so he kept quiet and continued after her.
Hunter led him back to the cave, where Order was waiting. She stared into Almira's face, eyes cold, but said nothing. She turned away and walked into a corner of the cavern, where she sat on a stone and put her face in her hands. Order watched her sadly, before turning to Kye.
"Okay," he placed his hands on his hips and took a breath. "What can we do to get you out of here?"
"Well, it should be simple," she said, her face wiping clean of any negative emotion, leaving only calm. She snapped her fingers, and lights burst into being and formed a map that seemed to be of the underground. She pointed. "In this cavern here, there is a key. It has very strong deffences, but I am confident that you will be able to get past them. he key, bring it back, and unlock this," she pointed to a dark chain that appeared around her neck.
Kye looked at the chain for a moment then looked at the map. Are you seriously going to risk your neck for a stranger again?"
I find that risking my neck for strangers is better then letting the world get destroyed.
Fair enough.
"Do you have an idea of what kind of defenses are around that key?" he turned back to Order.
She shrugged. “A couple man-eating Chimeras, a rogue dragon or two, some giants, and a crap ton of tech weapons. Oh, and a bunch of magical defenses.”
She says that like it's a normal thing.
That is a normal thing for us.
Sure but I thought that was just us.
Well start thinking of more than just us.
"Sounds wonderful," he sighed. "Hunter do you want to stay here? Or would you like to come watch the show?"
Hunter lifted her head. Her eyes were tired, and she had bags under them. She visibly brightened at the thought of a fight. “I’ll come.”
Kye pulled his satchel off his shoulder and looked through it. He pulled out his dagger and the small bottle of oil. "I'm going to need a lay out of the room and about a pint more of this," he held up the bottle.
You better not be planning on making me help with this.
Would you rather I die?
Good, now help me out by continuing to make no comment. Your voice makes it hard to think.
"Would you happen to know where I could get some more of this and where I can find a big granite rock?" He looked at Order.
