Ferran thought for a moment. Yeah…I think I could handle that.
Ferran thought for a moment. Yeah…I think I could handle that.
Not such a good guy after all, huh? She smiled. Okay, I'll see if there are any houses nearby that are empty. You sit here, okay?
He nodded weekly. Be careful, okay?
She nodded back at him. You know I will. Let me know if you need anything. And she left, walking along the edge of the woods. Pretty soon she came across a couple of houses that were across the street from the woods. Taking care to remember what direction she came from, she walked toward them. She crossed the dirt road and walked up to the first house. No luck, there were people in there. Going down the whole row of houses, she checked each one for inhabitants. The last house, however, showed no sign of human presence. She peeked in the windows just to check. All clear. I found a house. No sign of when they left or how long they'll be gone though.
Well…if we get caught, I'll get taken to the hospital. Maybe I can insist you come with me? Just planning ahead…
I don't think that'll work, but don't worry about me. You'll get taken to the hospital, and that's all that matters. Should I go in?
Ferran hesitated. He didn't want Alice to get caught, but they didn't really have another choice…
Go for it.
Okay. She circled the house, first checking for open windows. They had to be careful about this. None of the windows were open, which meant that it would be harder to get in without setting off a possible alarm, but it also meant that the residents probably wouldn't be back for a while. Next, she tried the doors. All locked. She considered breaking a window, but that might alert the neighbors. How do you pick a lock?
Ferran tried to recall it from his still hazy memory. It didn't help that it had begun to rain. Um…do you have a bobby pin?
No, I don't wear bobby pins. They get stuck in my hair. (True fact.)
Paperclip?
Ahh, nope.
Wire?
Okay, I don't have any of these things. Is there any way to pick a lock with a hair tie or anything that I actually have?
No…crap… Ferran grunted. Can't you just break a window?
It was kind of a last resort, but I guess I kind of need too now… She walked around to the back of the house, took a rock, and broke one of the panes in the back door. Then, carefully reaching in as to not cut herself, she slid back the deadbolt and turned the door handle. She opened the door. Silence. She sighed with relief. Okay, I'm in. They don't have an alarm, thankfully. Should I go back and get you now?
Might wanna check around just in case…
Right. Alice proceeded through the house, looking for signs as to how soon they would return. As she went through the kitchen, she stuffed a couple of granola bars in her jacket pocket and picked up an empty water bottle. She went to the kitchen sink and held the water bottle under the faucet, turning the handle. Some water sputtered out, but then nothing . She smiled. They must have turned the water off, meaning that they would probably be away for a while. Hopefully, anyway. I think it's all clear.
Alright…come back then…
She turned around, looking for the door, realizing she was a little lost. Wandering around the house looking of the exit, she stumbled upon what looked like the study. Curious, she went inside, picking up a small planner. She flipped through it stopping at what she hoped was today's date. At least, the day it was back in the story world. The whole week was crossed off and marked "vacation." She checked ahead and realized that the residents weren't due back until Tuesday. That gave them three days. After sharing this information with Ferran, she located the back door and made her way back into the woods.
