Jay kept pace with her, chewing on his lower lip.
Jay kept pace with her, chewing on his lower lip.
"Are we going to walk until night?" She asked, once again breaking the silence but her voice fairly quiet.
Jay shrugged. "I don't know. We'll see." he replied, taking a deep breath and looking around the woods.
Delia nodded and continued on, happy that the trees weren't terribly thick so she could check where the sun was in the sky. Slowly it was creeping towards noon and their trek through the woods continued.
Jay kept walking, taking a deep breath.
"I gotta take a break," She said as she tried to make her way over the second fallen tree they had encountered. They had been walking for a long time at this point, and her arms were thoroughly sore from the constant pressure of the crutches.
Jay nodded, and sat down by her. Leo barked, hopping up onto her lap and wagging his tail, licking at her happily.
Delia sighed as she sat down, tossing her crutches next to her and shrugging her pack off with another sigh, "That feels so much better." She didn't pay much attention to Leo when he first started licking her face, but eventually she started petting him, somehow smiling even though she didn't feel like it at all.
Jay nodded a little bit. "I'm sorry if I've been…going too fast for you." he said after a moment.
"No, it's a fine pace, the crutches just make everything ten times worse. Walking sucks with them," She explained, using her free hand to rub her sore shoulders and arms, "I really just wish I could snap my fingers and my leg would be healed. Then things would be amazing."
Jay nodded a little bit. "Alright." he let out a soft chuckle. "Yeah, that would be amazing, wouldn't it." Leo squirmed in her lap.
Delia shook her head and rolled her eyes at the squirming puppy in her lap, "And Leo, you're not helping with this whole taking a break thing." She was smiling though and clearly enjoying the puppy a little bit, "I think I traded walking duties for petting needy puppy duties."
Jay chuckled softly, reaching over to pet Leo gently. "Hey, petting a puppy isn't as taxing as walking is." he pointed out. Leo wagged his tail happily.
"I mean, when it's Leo you're petting, I think it might be," She replied, still smiling a tiny bit, "He demands all of your attention, just like walking does right now." Delia sighed again and rolled her shoulders, scooting a little closer to Jay and laying her head on his shoulder, "Sitting up hurts my back right now, I'll move in a few minutes when it feels better."
Jay nodded a little bit. "Alright." he replied with a faint, gentle smile. He kept petting Leo. "And you might be right about him." he chuckled.
She continued petting Leo as well, keeping her head laying on his shoulder. Her back really did hurt, but she also liked the human contact. "It does give you something to do though," She replied, smiling at how happy Leo seemed from the attention.
Jay chuckled and nodded, petting the little puppy. Leo wagged his tail again, tongue lolling out of his mouth happily.
"Do you think the drones are going to follow us?" She asked, trying to play off the seriousness of the question with how normal and calm the three of them were. This was one of the few moments that brought her back to before this all happened, when she was doing something that was completely normal before and was still pretty normal now.
"I doubt it." He replied. "There's only two of us. They'd go after bigger groups first." He shrugged his shoulders.
Delia nodded, still knowing she was going to be wary of drones following them but feeling a little better from his answer, "Do you think it would be safe to start a fire tonight then? I don't have many blankets with if we stay outdoors." It was going to be a while before night fell, but she wanted something to talk about. It seemed to make time pass a little quicker.
Jay thought for a moment. "It'll depend on how far we get." He replied slowly. "I don't want to light any fires too close to the base."
"That makes sense," She replied, sighing and reaching over for her pack again, "Well, should we get going again? I think my arms can handle a little more walking."
Jay nodded a little, getting up. Leo jumped down, stretching and wagging his tail.
Delia pulled on her pack with a sigh and grabbed her crutches, standing up once Leo had hopped off of her lap. "Let's get going." She sighed a little as she let her arms protest the crutches again, starting to walk once again.
Jay nodded, and started walking, letting Delia set the pace. Leo trotted along with them, tail wagging.
