@Kefi

Why do my characters decide to run away with my scenes like c'mon I need to SLEEP tonight and there were like actual plot things that still need to happen….(¬_¬)

One of mine (Clownface) keeps threatening to kill the others since he hasn't been used in a long time…. Luckily William keeps him in line.

Though William causes some problems too; good thing I know how to take care of him though! Lol

You know when you start writing a fanfic, and ao3 asks if you want your work to have multiple chapters, and you tick the box that says 'yes', and it asks how many chapters you're going to make the work?

I leave that section blank, because my only definite answer is 'at least two, hopefully'

i don’t really write multi chap (been doing a lot of short whumptober) but when i do, i write an outline of everything i want to happen, then divide that outline into chapters. it’s so helpful!

SO. I'm doing this story, right. It revolves around a few of the royal families of this fantasy world I came up with. As the story goes on, you find out more and more that each of the main characters are actually horrible, terrible people with serious mental complexes and very few redeeming qualities. The entire point of the story is SUPPOSED to be a look at how power, luxury, and wealth affects people, and the dangers of living life completely for yourself (as well as kind of calling out toxic and unhealthy tropes in YA stories, but that's more just a personal vendetta I wrote into it.) It's not the most profound thing I've written ever, but that is supposed to be kind of the moral to the story- as well as it just feeding my desire to write toxic people who are absurdly rich and powerful. Idk man.
ALL THAT SAID. I've gone and gotten attached to two of the characters and I kind of don't want to end their story badly, even if they are also frankly pretty awful people. Do y'all think it would mess up the moral of the story if two of the characters didn't have tragic endings? To be fair, they're also the only two characters who kind of represent the working-class type citizen who had to fight their way to the top, so I COULD possibly justify giving them a happy ending as opposed to the people who just have everything handed to them in the story. At least that's what I'm telling myself. Thoughts?

i'm sorry this is soooo late i've been ridiculously inactive. but i agree with Sy you should do a redemption arc for them, but please for the love of all things good make it DIFFICULT. have there be ups and downs and maybe they go back to their old ways for a bit and then make their way back (kind of like what's shown in A:TLA if you've seen it). and make sure the difficulties they face have A LOT to do with their own person weaknesses and struggles as they're two separate people. you could even have one of them not quite make it to complete their redemption that could be interesting. but yea those are my thoughts on it and sorry if it sounds condescending at all.

but yea i also have a new book idea?? which i really want to work on but at the same time i really wanna focus on my current project (which i've been working on for literal YEARS and still only have 4 chapters)

@Kefi

(I don't want to quote that whole paragraph I wrote, srry >.<) @stolenbrocoli Thanks for the advice! I think I am going to go that route, although I think at least one of the characters is going to stay slightly morally dubious. But less murder-y and more focused on reform, so… good for her I guess

DO IT
I usually work on like three projects at once. If I get bored or frustrated with one, I switch to another. It actually kinda helps me write more often and makes the work itself turn out better. Idk if that will work for you, but hey give it a shot!

I do this too! Get writer's block on one, go to another.

@stolenbrocoli group

yea i might start my new one and i have a feeling it'll be a little less mentally demanding than my current project so that's good. the one i'm doing right now requires soo much research and i think that's what get's me stuck

@SaltyLasagna

I stopped writing for two years and now I feel like my writers block is completely permanent :(
My writing skills have gone down so much and every time I try to produce something, no matter how excited I am with the idea of what I'm writing at first, I'm inevitably disappointed and never finish writing anything because I just end up comparing my current skill level to my old one, and it's extremely discouraging.
I know logically that practice and time will get me to the level I was at before, and that this frustration will pass, but I just can't seem to get past that first step.

so sorry i'm late with this. but if you haven't already, try writing super short stories as often as you can. it can help build those general writing skills, and on the side you can focus on worldbuilding, since that's kind of hard to practice with short stories. and also watch youtube videos for writing tips. they've helped me a lot. i went through a similar thing a while ago where i stopped writing for years and then just threw myself back into it.
