if you're excited or angry or just feeling anything about the writing process, just get it all out here ! share what you're feeling with us and if you're struggling with anything maybe me or someone else can help you out. Also unless you're venting about stuff, please try to keep things positive :)
It makes me so happy that people are actually replying lol. It didn't seem like very mony people were active on the general worldbuilding topic :D
Yeah, there aren't really that many people usually on this topic. But on the topic of worldbuilding, I think I'm getting some decent work done in my universe. :D
@Kyomi_naidesu yea me too ! I was really happy earlier cos i was never able to figure out my villains motivation but i finally got it :)
Oh, nice! Care to share what the motivation is? Or would you like to keep it a secret?
It's a pretty basic one but basically the leaders of a secret organization were trying to start a world war so they were playing both sides between 2 countries and hoped that other countries would get involved too. They wanted to do this so that all the world powers would be in a vulnerable state so they could take control of them. So the motivation is basically world domination, which has been done so many times but i'll probably try to go back and change some things to make it more unique. But other than all that I'm happy that I at least have a basis for their motivation.
Okay, but I thought of this meme while reading this.
Either way, so long as it's done well, a cliché is alright. Well, not always. Some are just way overused. If I were to give a tad of advice though, try not to make it too obvious what their goal is. Like don't just flat-out say "world domination", but try finding a way to show it. It's kind of easier said than done, but I felt like I should just say that. Sorry if you didn't need to hear that lol.
I am stuck in the Second Act Doldrums on like 90% of my projects and I'm hurtingggggg. The other 10% haven't even gotten to act 2 so that's…delaying the inevitable more than being a victory.
Like, maybe the closest I got to having a complete story arc was kind of destroyed by my then-writing group (and rightfully so) as having no engaging conflict. Turns out, if there's a galaxy-threatening force that comes into play in act 3, you should probably sprinkle in some urgency within your grad school slice-of-life story, I guess. (Not sure how yet. scream)
Ah, that sucks, dude. I feel ya there though. Getting stuck has to be one of the worst things when writing. I really hope you can push past this.
@Urby What i like to do is watch movies/shows or read books that pertain to the genre I'm reading to maybe get some inspiration. And also i noticed that when i used to work on multiple projects at once, it made it a lot harder to make progress, so maybe choose your favorite story and focus on that. I know it's not but but i hope it helped !
@Kyomi_naidesu and I appreciate all your feedback! For some reason I actually didn't think about showing it instead of saying it. To be honest, I havent put much thought into intoducing it at all, since it's such a new development, but i will definetly take that into account !
AHH ! Sometimes writing is vv hard ! 2 of my semi-important side characters are the parents of the main character and I'm having SUCH a hard time putting together their page on here. It's so hard for me to put myself in their shoes but at the same time, they grew up in the same time perio that I kind of did so i feel like it should be easier ? but anyways, that was my little rant. :/
Ah, yeah, I feel that. Writing is such a struggle. I feel like I should give up on prose and just stick to poetry, but part of me doesn't want to lol. Who else is going write the ideas in my mind, am I right?
Four chapters into my webcomic and I'm finally on the brink of figuring out the actual plot and the motivations of the villain. I'm also on the brink of having to start actually adding in those aspects of the story, so hopefully my brain kicks into gear pretty soon X'D Pro tip: Never start posting your story publicly until you've at LEAST written the entire outline ;w;
I know what you're talking about. I can't even count the amount of times i've posted chapters and then realized how many plot holes there are >:( It' vv frustrating.
I'm terrible at gauging distances. It's so hard for me to tell how wide an area like a city is or how long it takes to get there. Especially since my worlds are set in times before cars and such and people use horses to get around. And still others can transform and fly their way from one city to the next, so how long should that take? An hour? A day?
Also trying to work out a conversion system for them, if anyone wouldn't mind helping me out on that
Thank you XD
I realize living in the southeastern part of the States has left me with terrible distance perception, but this helps XD
Yo, I totally did not know r/worldbuilding existed. Learn something new every day I guess. Sweet source, thanks for sharing, Dom.
About the conversion thing I mentioned: In my world there are certain people who can shift into dragons. I don't want them to be able to hold the form indefinitely without a drawback, but I also want them to be able to take casual flights or patrols without worrying about spending too much energy. Not to mention if they need to travel someplace far away. So I devised a rule that once they turn back human, they'll have to wait a while before they can transform again. What I have so far:
- less than 1 hour phased in = 10 minutes cooldown
- 2 hours phased in = 30 minutes cooldown
- 3 hours phased in = 1 hour cooldown
- 4 hours phased in = 2 hours cooldown
- 6 hours phased in = 4 hours cooldown
- over 6 hours phased in = corresponding number of cooldown hours
Ex. 9 hours phased in = 9 hours cooldown
Idk if I'm too happy about it so far. Feels like I'm not taking something into account. An alternative would be 20 minutes cooldown for every hour they spend in that form.
@NobleWolf i think that's a great system actually ! but take into account that there aren't timers in nature so it wouldn't be EXACTLY 10 or 30 minutes. I don't know if that's helpful, just something to think about :)
@stolenbrocoli No you're right, it's not exact, but whenever the young ones are quizzed on it (and they sometimes are) that's what they'll say. The tricky part is figuring out how to introduce it in the story
