always, always, always ask your teachers for help before whatever you need help with becomes a problem. be the kid who's honest and takes initiative, even if you're struggling. once i started being very open about the fact that i was struggling, it served me really well. you always run into some assholes, but i find that most teachers respond really well to students who are open with them. when i was having an episode of any kind, or when i had a lot of extracurricular commitments, i also asked for a ton of extensions on my assignments, and it's a lot better to turn in something good a little late than something bad on time, unless your teacher is a real stickler for deadline policies, but y'know. chances are not all of them will be, so if you get swamped, it's all about balance and situational awareness

I do!

  1. Always know due dates for projects
  2. Always read the details for said project so you make sure you do it right
  3. Study for tests ALWAYS!! At least one day ahead of time
  4. If you can do homework during lunch you should because it’s GREAT

@croccin-champagne

(Also you called me dear. Which is weird–not that I have anything against it.)

ffhfhh sorry, i don't know if you saw my thing in the pm. i'm using as many nicknames and things as i can because they shouldn't only be for romantic relationships and also i love my friends and want to show them that

if you don't like any or all of them say so!

do your homework the day it's due, too. as someone who spent like all of seventh and eighth grade behind and failing, it's seriously a good idea. i never took it seriously until now though, kind of ironic

schedule break inbetween studying, eat crunchy foods for concentration and drink water for memorizing! it's proven drinking water while listening to or reading something can help you retain the info

also, my number one study tip when i did study, for memorization, is read it five times, write it five times, and say it three if you can

(Dude that thing with the water is cool :0 I’ve never heard that before)

Here’s my memorization tip as someone who had to memorize around 20 pages word for word
Preferably do this in an empty room where no ones around
Read the lines (I usually do it out loud)
And once you think you have it, stare at the ceiling and try to repeat it then check if you were right
That might just work for me tho idk

@ccb group

this is all such good advice. i emphasized what to do if you can't get things in on time, but yes, the best move is getting things in on time lol

@actual-fandom-trash

but seriously do your work. I get the whole procrastinating stuff but it's so so much easier to just do it as soon as you can instead of putting it off.
for memorization- I've always repeated whatever it is (whether it's a line or a summary of some page or something) until it stuck in my head
join clubs that interest you!! I'm being serious when I say book club was one of my favorite things from the past year! I met people and the librarian was super nice too

heck yeah, join as many clubs and extracurriculars as possible, as soon as possible. if you decide later you don't like some, that's fine! better to have tried too much than to have tried too little. 90% of my best high school memories are from theater and tech crew

@Pickles group

If you're a huge procrastinator, write down the due date as the day before it's actually due. Don't take study hall for granted, and unless you have it first period, don't do homework that's due later that day. It's a bad habit that's really easy to get into, so just don't. You'll end up procrastinating in study hall too and it won't get done

YES, study hall is very important. Don't spend it slacking off, actually get stuff done. It's so much better to do that work when it's assigned and the details are still fresh in your head as opposed to a day later.

@Pickles group

If you're That kind of person, listen to a podcast while you work. It helps me concentrate and tricks my brain into thinking I'm doing something fun instead of working

@ninja_violinist

Ask all the questions!! so many of them!! even if you feel silly! in the grand scheme of things, being the one who asked a dumb question is still less awful than not knowing the answer to a dumb question.

ooooh fuck, I'm afraid of going into high school but also, I'm going to an art school so I'm gonna be with a bunch of gay kids. I started a cult at the try outs.

@Becfromthedead group

(Slipping in to help give advice because I’ve been there, done that)
Also I went to an arts school for high school! I really wish I’d actually hung out with more of the cool gay art kids, but ofc that was back when I didn’t realize I was bi yet. And I was so socially withdrawn by senior year that I barely hung out with anyone. In fact, I’d say I lost friends, sometimes on purpose.
So I guess my first bit of advice: make time to hang out with your friends! Also clubs and extracurriculars are wonderful ways to meet people like yourself. You should devote at least a little time to socialization because it really helps with your overall mental state, and I’ve found that it keeps me more productive personally.

@croccin-champagne

two quick little notes and announcements for you kids!

the first is that this is a chat for everyone looking for advice, even if it is mainly geared towards advising freshmen. if you're worried about going into any new grade, dating at all, or literally anything related to the struggles of being a teenager–not all need to correlate–you're welcome to come looking for help!!

the second is that i am shamelessly adding a link to my fashion/makeup/and confidence advice chat because i feel like that's something a lot of young girls, guys, and otherwise could use. it's right here and will be available on the first post of this forum!

@croccin-champagne

fhjfjd does anybody actually use those? i feel like a blog site would gain more traction lmao

and i'm not the most qualified at advice. you guys have done a lot more than i have!
