Nyt was taken aback by this question. She looked back at her for a moment before answering. "I'm not completely sure." She said in a soft voice before she took her leg and wiped it down with the washrag. "I've always been fascinated by your culture before we came and I thought we wiped all humans out."
Despite the answer Abby refused to let her guard down, grimacing at the contact and the painful reminder of what happened. “Yeah, I heard about that. Luckily for me you missed some.” Abby hissed as the girl cleaned her wound. “Sorry. For trespassing I guess.”
Nyt chuckled but it sounded more like a cackle for Abby. "Don't apologize. I'm happy you hid here and not somewhere else. Who knows what other people would do?" She said. After she was done cleaning her leg she took the alcohol and poured it onto some gauze. "This is going to hurt but it'll stop infections." She said as she began to pat her leg down.
Abby nodded, acknowledging the fact that had anyone else found her… well anything could have happened from being killed on the spot to someone making a public spectacle and then killing her.
None of the rumors she heard painted them well. She held her breath as the alcohol touched her skin.
“Thanks.”
She honestly had a hundred questions she wanted to ask but… One wouldn’t hurt.
“What’s your name? Mine’s Abby.”
Nyt smiled. "It's nice to meet you Abby. My names Nyt." She said. She finished up cleaning the wound. "How did you get this anyways?" She asked as she started to wrap it up.
Abby honestly didn’t remember so she just shrugged. “Occupational hazard of a scavenger. Luckily it wasn’t an animal.”
She took a moment to look around the room before speaking again. “You’ve got a nice place, Nyt.” She sighed, “So, what happens now?”
Nyt finished wrapping her leg before just sitting there. "I…don't know. Are you hungry or thirsty?" She asked as she started to gather up the suplies.
Abby shrugged. This is becoming a habit.
“A little, I guess. But I don’t want to burden you.” She said staring at the bandage her leg. “You’ve already done a lot for me… with no reason to.” Looking back up Nyt. “Honestly, why? You all tried to wipe us out. Why the change?”
Nyt looked at the floor at that. "I really didn't want them to do that. But I had no choice in the matter. I'm not a higher-up or anyone important. I'm sorry and I know that doesn't mean anything." She said as she walked out of the room to take the bandages back and to grab her something to eat and drink.
Abby blushed looking down. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t blaming you personally. I’m not important either. No one really worries about me, just what I can bring back.” Her voice trailed off, hugging her legs.
Nyt came back with a sandwich and some water. "What's the thing on your mouth anyways? I don't remember humans having anything like that." Nyt asked as she handed Abby the food.
Abby looked up quickly, “Huh? Oh thank you.” She smiled taking the food before raising a brow. “You mean my mask? We didn’t have to use them before, but now we all need them. We can’t breath without them anymore. I don’t know the specifics of it but something changed the air when you guys came along.” She took a deep breath before lifting it up with one hand and brought the water up with the other. Once finished taking a drink she placed the mask back in place.
Nyt had a look of surprise. "Really? I didn't think we had brought anything along that would do that." She mused. "Do you need anything else?" She asked. She wanted to make sure she was comfortable. "Do you have any questions?"
Abby raised a brow in return. “Really? I mean I know you brought some animal species with you but… no terraforming equipment or something like that? How similar is Earth compared to your world, then?”
Nyt thought for a moment. "Nyxis was pretty much the same as Earth except for the more extreme wilderness here. Earth also has a higher content of Nitrogen did so that was good." Nyt explained.
Abby nodded. ”I see… Wait, ’Was’?” She knew it was really none of her business but she couldn't stop her curiosity, ”What do you mean by that? Did something happen or do you just miss it?”
(Sorry I was gone. I got busy.)
"Our planet got destroyed. That's why we came to earth. A series of super volcanos went off and caused the world to go into chaos. It became inhabitable. We had to find a new world. We sent a few ships back to see if it was getting better a few years ago but it seems to be getting worse." Nyt explained.
(It’s ok. I actually had to work.)
Abby’s eyes widened. “Oh my gosh! I am so sorry. I didn’t know. I can’t imagine… I’m sorry.”
No one had time to tell people what was going on. They were too busy running. All they knew was that the Earth was being invaded and humans were being killed.
Nyt smiled at her. "It's fine. It's been so long. But that didn't give my race a excuse to kill yours off." Nyt said. "I'm sorry, again." She apologized.
”Maybe not but it also doesn't give us an excuse for…” Abby gave a small sigh as she pushed her hood down. ”You said you were interested in our culture. Well, Earth has… had at least a hundred different cultures all over. But one thing that I think is consistent with all of them is that Humans are an easily frightened species. We either lash out or we run. And you made us run.” Abby looked straight at Nyt. ”I'm not blaming you, but we as a species don't like it when we have to run. But we know we're outmatched so we can't fight back. So the only thing we can do is… insult you behind your back… Make you guys seem like the monsters we used to joke about.” She looked down again, fidgeting in embarrassment. ”I'm sorry for that too.”
Nyt chuckled at this. "You kind of look like monsters to us as well. Well at least, that's what I was told. Humans look so beautiful up close." She said as she rested a hand on her arm. "Would you like to see some of the human stuff I collected?"
Abby chuckled, ”Yeah, I guess we don't have any room or right to judge… Some humans didn't treat other humans right because of how they look.” She blushed slightly before looking Nyt over. ”You don't actually look that scary either. Though now I'm curious about in what ways you considered us monsters.” She gave an intrigued smirk. ”Maybe I can tell you exactly what you found.”
"Let's go then!" She said, scooping Abby up again. "Also, are all humans this small?" She asked. Nyt's race stood around 6'6 tall. Nyt was 6'2. "I thought humans were bigger." She mused.
Abby squeaked a bit at being picked up again, her face turning red. ”I can still walk you know.” She rolled her eyes with a slight huff, ”Not really. I haven't met many but some humans could get up to 6 feet tall. Though most of them used to play a sport called basketball.”
Abby was only 5’5” herself.
"Not with that leg you can't!" Night said. "You're so small! It's adorable!" She giggled as she spun around. "Maybe we should wait till morning before I show you everything." She said, thinking about the animals out there.
”I’ve managed with worse.” Abby muttered before being spun around in Nyt’s arms. Her blush turning a deeper shade of red as she had to hide her face against the alien’s chest.
”Y-yeah maybe tomorrow would be better.” Speaking up again. ”And it's not my fault I got the shorter genetics. Though it does have some benefits with me being a scavenger.”
Nyt plopped down onto her nest, pulling Abby onto her. "How many of you are still alive?" Nyt asked. She wanted to know if she could help them, even if she couldn't do much else than maybe provide shelter and food.
”Globally? I have no idea. Where I live…” Abby had to think it over for a minute, ”Ya know, I've never done a headcount but I’d have to guess… at least a couple hundred? Maybe.” She tried to pull herself out of Nyt’s grip but the taller girl was too strong. ”Are you going to let me go or did you plan on treating me like a teddy bear for the night?”
Nyt was surprised to hear so many. "Huh. Didn't expect there to be so many." She mused. "And what's a teddy bear?" She asked as she pulled Abby closer. "Also, you said you were a scavenger. What's that?"
What is the purpose of a rubber duck?
Abby had to chuckle at that, unable to keep the broad smile off her face. ”A Teddy Bear is a stuffed toy animal that people, especially young kids, snuggle with when they sleep. It makes them feel safe.” Calming down a bit she continued, ”Yeah, I'm a scavenger. It’s kinda like my job. I go out and look for stuff we can use. It can be just about anything; mostly scraps of metal or something. Sometimes I’ll get lucky and find some stuff we can use for food.”
She gave a sigh at the last question Nyt asked. ”It’s not really that many. There used to be 6 billion of us on the whole planet.” Abby managed to tuck a strand her wild hair back, ”It’s kinda ironic actually. We used to think we were so special; the apex predator. But now we're more like the dinosaurs, except we’re only endangered at this point instead of extinct.”
