”Yeah… I'm not claiming to be an expert but that sounds like an archeologist to me. Though in this case, Xeno archeologist would be more accurate.” Abby started blushing again feeling a little awkward. ”Let me know if I start being annoying. I'm not usually the best for conversation.”
Nyt chuckled. "It's fine. I haven't talked to anyone in a while. Most people don't come this far out from the city." She explained. The microwave let out a ding, showing they were done.
Abby smiled, ”Yeah, not a lot of humans come this close to the city either. So why did you choose to distance yourself?”
Even through the mask, the delicious smell of the batter buns was making her mouth water.
"I kinda felt drawn to the wilderness. I know it's dangerous but I always found it fascinating." She said as she set a plate of Batter buns in front of Abby.
Abby nodded thoughtfully, the phantom pain of an old injury tingling. ”It can be pretty dangerous sometimes but it can be peaceful too. You just have to be careful or ready to stand your ground, depending on what you come across.”
Looking at the food she gave Nyt a grateful smile. ”Thank you, these look amazing.”
She proceeded to cut a few pieces out before repeating her actions from last night, taking a deep breath then removing her mask to eat.
The Batter Buns had the flakiness of a biscuit and the taste of a pancake. "When did you have to start wearing those?" Nyt asked, gesturing to the mask.
Abby hummed as she readjusted the item in question. ”I’m not really sure… I think I remember my old history teacher said that you were halfway settled but cargo ships were still coming in when some of the earlier survivors started having what were, at the time, believed to be severe asthma attacks.” She paused as the old lesson started to come back to her. ”By the time they lost at least a third, I think, they figured out what was really happening and made these masks.”
Nyt frowned at this, not knowing what to say. "Well then, you said you wanted to see all the stuff I collected today, right?" She asked, seeming to perk back up. "I have tons of old stuff and it'd be cool if some of it was still operational."
Nyt’s enthusiasm was contagious as Abby found herself grinning. ”Yeah, it would! I would love to see your collection. Thank you for breakfast, by the way. Those Batter Buns were delicious.”
Her smile faltered a bit when she stood up too quickly in her excitement. ”Uh… Lead the way.”
Nyt wrapped her tail around Abby for balance, seeing that she faltered (Is that a thing?) a bit when she stood up. She kept her tail there for more of balance than support, seeing that Abby did not like to be babied. She lead Abby outside to the same shop she had been in last night. She opened the door, revealing objects that ranged from Teddy Bears to Shot Guns.
(I think so… I’ve always pictured it similar to stumbling. And it's not that she doesn't like it; it's just a foreign concept to her. She does try to be independent, which is why she scavenges alone most of the time but really she's a bit lonely.)
Abby was sure that if this kept up her face was going to be permanently red but she didn't protest.
”Thanks.”
When she looked around the treasure trove that was Nyt’s collection, her jaw dropped. Last night she had been focused on safety not on taking in the view.
”This… This is amazing, Nyt! Look at all this stuff. I just… Wow!” Abby was acting very much like a kid in a toy store… aside from the running around part. ”Where did you find all this?” She asked with wide eyes.
Nyt chuckled as she saw Abby's excitment. "I've found some of it in the woods, people gather up stuff and try to throw it away but I grab most stuff before it can get trashed, and I've also looked through old junkyards." Nyt explained. "I've been able to classify some stuff but others I have no idea what they were used for."
Abby gave Nyt an appreciative smirk. ”You’d make a great scavenger. Probably better than half of a couple teams I can think of. You just have to be careful with some of this stuff. You actually got a few weapons in here. Which ones did you have questions about?” She asked, looking back at the collection.
Nyt looked shocked about the weapons. "I do? Which ones are those?" Nyt asked, looking around the room. She had a few shotguns, a bow and arrows, a machete or two and a lot of knives.
Abby took care to point out each of those weapons and explain how they were usually handled, occasionally with a small demonstration of how to hold them but she never aimed at Nyt or fired any of them.
”But this one is mine.” She picked up the spear she dropped last night. ”It’s a spear. It can be used as a melee weapon up close or if you're really good, you can throw it.” She ended her explanation by showing a couple of different grips on it as well as the stance to throw it.
Nyt watched Abby with curiosity. "Huh. I didn't think I had collected anything dangerous except for the blades." She explained. She looked at the spear when Abby showed it off. "Is this what you dropped when you fell last night?" Nyt asked.
”It’s ok. I probably wouldn't recognize any of the weapons you guys make either, until it's used.” Abby reassured. ”Yeah, I dropped it. My uncle Toby helped me make it. He works with metal so he made the head out of some the first pieces of scrap metal I found. I made the staff and fastened the two pieces together.” She added with a bit of pride.
(Bump)
(Shit! I thought I replied to this.)
Nyt nodded. "What's this? I can't figure out what it would be used for?" Nyt said as she picked up a teddy bear.
(It's ok. I figured you got busy.)
Abby had to fight through a small fit of laughter to answer. ”That’s a teddy bear. I mentioned them last night.” She still had a grin on her face as she leaned against the staff of her spear.
Nyt looked at the bear. "Oh! That makes sense." She gave the bear a squeeze. "It does seem very cuddly."
”They are.” Abby confirmed. ”You should try sleeping with one sometime.” She half teased with a friendly smirk.
A smirk crawled across Nyt's face. "I thought I already did last night." She said before walking over to pick up something else.
Abby immediately turned bright red at that. Unsure if it was a joke or a compliment, she avoided looking at Nyt’s eyes. Clearing her throat she turned her attention back to the storeroom. ”So… Did you have any other questions about anything else in here?”
