He just rolled his eyes, "Whatever… let's just go and get this over with."
She didn’t tell him what she was going to do, she just moved quickly, she shocked him with enough energy to render him unconscious.
He gasped, then stumbled before his eyes closed and he started to fall.
She quickly caught him, regret very much present in her gaze. She just reminded herself that right now he was a threat…hopefully he chose their side. When he would wake up, he’d find himself alone in a featureless room. Well…relatively alone, there was the boy next door.
He woke slowly, rubbing at his head through the jumpers sleeve as he tried to adjust to the brightness of the room. Kyle was confused at first, then he remembered what happened and he wanted to go back to sleep.
“Are you awake?” A voice came from somewhere nearby. It sounded like the voice of a child, filled with concern.
"Yeah, I am," He replied, trying to keep his voice steady, "What's your name?"
“Jonah” the kid said, actually sounding quite happy and overall at peace. “And you’re Kyle.” He seemed to know that with certainty.
"Yeah that's- Wait, how did you know?" Kyle frowned a little, fiddling with the ends of the jumper.
“Sorry….Dad always tells me not to read people’s thoughts without permission but I was bored…I didn’t mean to scare you….” the kid whined slightly.
"Hey, no it's okay, I forgive you," He smiled softly, "I take it you can mind read, then. That's pretty cool."
“Thanks! They’ve been trying to limit my abilities though, I don’t like it….”
"I wouldn't like it either. I'm sorry they're trying to do that to you."
“But its okay! It’s not really working.” He laughed slightly before another voice was added to the mix. It was the voice of a teenage girl. “It’s also because you’re eight years old and never hurt a soul, kid” you could see her, she was in the room across from yours, just a small hunched up form in a dark corner.
"Am I really the only adult here?" He sighed and shook his head slightly, "And who might you be, Miss?" He asked, looking over at the figure.
“Kayla.” The girl responded, standing up. She honestly looked like she’d been through hell.
“Why are you so sad???” Jonah pouted.
"Not everyone has a good life, Jonah," He muttered, resting his head back against the wall, "And some people aren't very nice and do bad things. I'm sorry for whatever you've been through, Kayla."
“Permission to scream?” She asked to no one in particular.
“You’re just gonna hurt-“ but she began before he could finish. You couldn’t hear it but you could pratically see the waves, the door vibrating. She stopped after a second, clutching her ears.
“I told you it’s just gonna bounce back!” Jonah sounded frustrated but in a concerned way. “Oh and when you asked earlier if you’re the only adult here, you pretty much are. There’s less people with powers among the older generation”
"Great. That's just… great," He sighed and rubbed at his face, crossing his legs and leaning forward a little, "You okay Kayla? What was… what did you do?"
“I guess you could call it a super scream? It’s my power, normally I can shatter stuff….I mean that is how I accidentally blew out someone’s ear drums and killed him….” she fell silent again. It was the story on the news the other day, the dead politician, that was her.
His eyes widened a little, "Oh… I'm sorry." He couldn't imagine killing anybody, whether it be on purpose or an accident. It gave him the shivers.
She shrugged “maybe they’re right, maybe we deserve to be locked up.” She fell back into her silence and Jonah spoke up. “But you have a chance to get out of here. I can tell, they don’t plan on keeping you forever. I think they’re planning on recruiting you.”
“But is it worth having a tracker on you all the time? Watching your every move and making sure you don’t use your powers unless the government tells you to?” Kyle curled up into his jumper.
Jonah shrugged and then remembered Kyle couldn’t see it. “It isn’t worth it. That’s why some of us stay hidden. The rest of us find Dark Ride.” He frowned “the news tries to make him look super mean though…”
