(I'm so sorry, I wasn't well last night!)
After everyone had left the hideout, Kira turned to Miki with a smile. "You're a lot smarter than you play yourself off to be."
"You've noticed?" The boy gazed at the ground, kicking the air between him and the floor. "I think you're the only person who thinks I'm of any use to this gang."
Everyone had said that to him, everyone apart from Arashi.
"You know, as part of being a leader, you must be able to recognise potential in others that they don't even see in themselves, and help them to bring out what makes them unique." Kira pulled up a stuffed dummy and left it standing between himself and Miki. "You are extremely perceptive, Miki, and that is a skill that even I don't have. Something you lack, however, is your ability to hold your own in a fight." he gestured to the dummy. "I want you to imagine that this dummy is an enemy. Give it everything you have."
At first, Miki was a little hesitant. He knew himself that he wasn't that good at fighting, however he knew that if he hoped to stay as part of the gang he would need to prove he was capable of fighting. He'd seen what the others do during practice, he'd noted a few of their techniques – although there were a few techniques he couldn't wrap his head around, like Kira's.
Miki took a deep breath, staring intensely at the dummy. Perhaps if I use Akane's technique, or possibly Len's?
"I think that's enough for tonight."
Miki turned to Kira with wide eyes, and was a little shocked to see the leader smiling. He hadn't even gotten a chance to attack the dummy!
"In the time it took you to figure out who's technique you were going to copy, the enemy could have pinned you down or got you in a choke hold." Kira patted Miki on the back, guiding him out of the hideout. He switched on the lasers, quickly getting out in the 3 second delay the timer gave him. "Where are you staying tonight?"
"Uhm.. I hadn't thought that far. Possibly a friend's house?" In truth, Miki was just going to go back to the same old house he ever returned to. He never wanted to return to his mother, but sometimes he didn't have a choice.
"You're staying with me tonight." Kira corrected him, leading the way back to his house. "My parents won't mind, and besides, we both have things to do tomorrow."
"If you're sure… Thank you."
They made it back to Kira's house, climbed the tree outside his window, and sighed in relief when they sat down on Kira's bed. Kira allowed Miki to borrow a set of pyjamas, and as soon as their heads his the pillows they were dead to the world. As soon as the sun rose, they would be back to their normal lives, and everything would repeat again.
