"Us? There is no us. I'm merely following you because I've never explored beyond my room. I couldn't. The doctors gave me a reason to be curious, to keep trying to live. In a way, they did help me…"
"…I'll just lead the way." Fox slowly walks off, not really making sure Melanie is following them.
Melanie, after hesitating, drifts behind him, keeping herself as far away as she can without losing sight of Fox
After going through a few doors, Fox stops, looking up at a vent.
"N-no. Those tunnels are scary. I've seen monsters in there before," Melanie says, six feet away. "They might get me…"
"I guess neither of us are going in there…" Fox starts walking again.
There's a crack sound below Fox, the ground visibly cracking apart. Fox freezes in place.
Melanie jerks away, scrambling for the nearest bolted-down thing and hugging it.
Part of the ground crumbles below Fox, they move away from the ground falling apart. Eventually he bumps into Melanie, and gently grabs her, protecting her.
"This isn't gonna be a gentle ride, so you better hold on tight." The ground below them both crumbles away, causing them to fall.
Melanie squeals, and swings her arms aimlessly, forcing her eyes closed. She was absolutely terrified of heights (if this makes sense…?), and falling into the unknown only made it worse. Melanie kicked, screamed and squealed, trying to grab onto anything else but Fox.
Fox keeps as calm as he can. When they hit the ground, Fox takes most of the impact, and slowly lets go off Melanie.
"Ughhhh…."
Melanie grunted, hugging herself, and backs away, unsure of how to notify Fox that she's grateful without giving in, saying that Fox was right. That yes, they could be friends. But she doesn't know how. She doesn't want to admit that she was wrong, or say that she's weak, or say that she's sorry. She wanted to do good, but she wanted to prove Fox wrong, as much as she knew it was pointless.
Melanie stares at Fox, not saying anything, not moving farther away, waiting for him to move, waiting for a sign that he was alright.
"You alright Melanie…?" Fox slowly sits up. "Fuckin everything hurts."
Melanie remains silent, staring at him calculatingly, and her pose seems more relaxed. Tense, yes, but different from her fearful self.
"Melanie…?" Fox looks at her, his face looking sort of worried.
Melanie opens her mouth, but hesitates and closes it. She stands, slowly, wincing a little, and nods to him.
"That's good." Fox slowly stands up, and walks over to her, and hugs her.
Melanie stiffins and doesn't hug back, but she doesn't shove Fox away either. She didn't lean into him like before, in fact, she seemed lost in her own world.
They let go of Melanie, and the pain finally catches up to Fox, and they start to cry from it. They sit against a wall.
"…just go on without me for now… It hurts a lot…"
Melanie shakes her head. She couldn't say anything to make both her and Fox feel better, but she could do something. She sits right across from him, folding her hands together and setting them in her lap. She hated herself, and she knew that she should take the opportunity and leave, but she couldn't leave Fox behind.
"You're… not gonna… go? …Thank you…" Fox gestures for her to sit down next to them.
Melanie looked at him incredulously for a second, and then sits next to him, distancing herself a few feet from Fox.
Fox smiles. "We should rest for a while…"
Melanie shakes her head no. "You can rest. I haven't been able to, not much recently." She has visible bags under her eyes that seem too dark to be natural. Melanie hadn't slept in a week.
"Try for me, ok?" Fox smiles, trying to stay calm.
