(Oh happy birthday Rachel!)
(Thank you!!)
Hosea nodded. "So we start in one place and work our way from there. How's that sound?"
Ethyn nodded and turned away to cough repeatedly into the corner.
Hosea took notice of the coughing in the back. "Ethyn, by chance, that wouldn't happen to be caused by being away from Zach would it?"
When Ethyn turned back around, he slipped a thin chain out from under his shirt. He held what ever was on the end of it in his hand.
Ethyn nodded. "Yeah… You're good at this." He smiled weakly.
Hosea then slowed the car down and pulled off again. "Would getting farther from him make it worse."
Ethyn thought for a moment. "Maaaayyybe?" He was silent for a few seconds before adding. "It will definitely make it worse for him. And probably me because of that."
"I ask because as we have gotten farther from the city it seems like your coughing has gotten worse," Hosea explained. "Makes me wonder if I should turn around and head back."
Ethyn shook his head. "I dunno, I think it's just thinking about him. I don't even know what country he is in."
Ethyn loosened his hand and let the chain slip from his hand. Attached to end was a set of militry dogtags that Ethyn now let hang visibly around his neck.
Ava looked up, her eyes dull and devoid of emotion now, having heard a strange noise. It was the chink of the military dogtags clinking against each other as they fell, but they stopped short, hanging from Ethyn's neck on a chain. "You joined the military?" she asked, her voice tired, but she feigned interest, so she could have something to do.
"I'm more than three thousand years old, I've joined the military more than once." Ethyn replied, fiddling with a loose thread on his shirt. "These aren't mine though."
"Can't remember what war it was. It wasn't the world wars, I was in those though." Ethyn said mostly to himself.
Hosea was quiet for a moment. Not pulling the car back onto the road. Both his hands on the wheel. They just sat there for several moments, and Kye had taken notice. "What's wrong?"
"We have company," Hosea stated calmly. Almost as soon as he said that a helicopter could be heard over head.
"And what are we gonna do about it?" Ethyn asked, getting back up into the seat and glancing nervously out the window.
"Good question," Hosea replied. "What do you think?"
"What makes you think I know?" Ethyn snapped, suddenly upset.
"I didn't say you had to know. But I do want to know what you think of this situation," Hosea trailed a little bit at the end then took a small breath. "How about this, what do you see as options right now? Any of you."
Ethyn unslouched. "Well, there's always murder but… Well we aren't really inconspicuous are we? We can't get by if we get stopped. But otherwise I don't know."
"Well, you named a couple of things. What else can you think of right now that could possibly be less destructive and could maybe throw the helicopter off course?" Hosea asked. Kye then rolled his eyes and turned to look at Ethyn.
"What did you do in town to cause a distraction for us?" he asked.
Ethyn stared at him for a while. "Fffiirreworkss…?"
"And where do fireworks explode?" Kye urged. Hosea gave a slight smile.
"Also note where the helicopter is," he added.
"The sky…" Ethyn said, realising.
"Uh huh," Hosea noded. "Have another idea?"
