Veronica smiled, a type of smile probably only Elaine would see. Her eyes danced with joy, but she forced herself to look at her watch, “Lunch is almost over.” She pointed out with a small frown at her watch. “Why can’t we just stay here for the rest of the day?”
Elaine let out a quiet groan, leaning forward to rest her forehead against Veronica's. "I wish we could…… but my parents would probably kill me. Or lock me in my room all weekend. Either one."
“Yeah…” That didn’t stop the wish to have more time with Elaine. After another breath, she forced herself to pull away and stand up, holding out her hand with a smile to help Elaine up.
Elaine took it, the brief moment of content sending tingles up her arm. "I wish I could just push you against this tree again….." she whispered into Veronica's ear before grinning and setting off over the field.
Veronica’s cheeks were painted with red as a blush bloomed over her, and a secret want that drove her to quickly follow Elaine. She was almost like a puppy, extremely attached to Elaine and wanting to hear her every word.
Elaine turned around, jogging backwards so that she could face Veronica. Her grin only grew when she saw the rosy hue of the other girl's cheeks, a strange sort of satisfaction spreading throughout her chest. "Aw," she teased, "You're blushing."
Veronica blushed even more, “Your fault,” She pointed out teasingly in attempt to ignore the heat on her face. Veronica typically hated to jog, but seeing Elaine there made her want to just keep on running. Just so she could look at that beautiful face all day.
Elaine slowed to a walk, lips working their way into a teasing smile. "Mm, there'll be more of that when I sleep over tonight…" God, Veronica was so perfect. Every inch of her.
Veronica rolled her eyes playfully. She slowed with Elaine, coming to wrap her arm around her waist- if only a little bit before they approached the school. She wished they could just spend the day together…
They got closer and closer to the school, and eventually Elaine had to take a step away from Veronica, going against every single instinct in her body and heart. She swallowed, trying hard not to let her eyes wander from the olace she had glued them to; Veronicas eyes. “They’ll want to know where we went..”
“Uh… yeah,” Veronica scratched the back of her neck, “What do you think should we tell them?” She chewed on her lower lip, frowned a little more as they got closer. She wished she wouldn’t have to pretend, she wished she could be with Elaine all day.
"We'll say that we didn't get everything done for a project so we went to work on it together?" she suggested, knowing it was a stupid idea but saying it anyways. "You probably have better ideas, though."
Veronica nodded before adding on, “We could tell them it was the english essay, we realized we needed to correct our conclusion?” She didn’t look forward to them asking her and Elaine, she wasn’t a bad liar, but she wasn’t a good liar either.
"Yeah, good idea. And if you want, you can leave the talking bit to me, I've got plenty of… lying experience? God, that makes me sound like a terrible person. But you know what I mean." Elaine resisted the urge to take Veronica's hand in hers, but barely. This was going to be harder than she thought.
Veronica laughed, eyes still holding a sparkle of joy in them even as they walked into the school, “I know what you mean, lo-“ love. She made a little grimace at herself for being so bad at this, forcing the feeling away on a short leash.
Veronica shook her head at herself about to make another comment, but then she saw Olivia -Ben beside her with a book in his hand- waving to them, “Where’ve you two been?”
Elaine smiled easily, displaying her phone. “We realized we’d forgitten something on our English essay, so we went to the park to complete it. I have it on my phone.”
Ben merely gave a ‘Mhhmm…’ as he continued to read his book, while Olivia asked curiously, “Did you get it all done?”
Veronica nodded with a small smile, “Yeah, I think our essay’s looking pretty good.” She almost -almost- went to wrap her arm around Elaine. But she resisted the urge, just barely, rather distracting herself by looking at Ben’s book- a Stephen King novel.
Elaine tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear to keep herself from slipping her arm around Veronica. This was going to be a lot harder than she thought..
"How about you guys? Who did you do your essays with?"
“I did mine with that one girl, Elecia,” Olivia responded with a shrug, “Too bad neither of you are in our hour of English.”
“I did mine alone,” Ben responded absentmindedly, flipping a page, “I wanted to keep reading and finish it at home…” His eyes widened a fraction at whatever he was reading, and Veronica let out a laugh.
Elaine smiled at the expression on his face, leaning forward to ruffle his hair, as she usually did. “What’re you reading there, Ben?”
“Just [I don’t know any Stephen King novels so………], I’m rereading it.” He replied, flipping the page again. Veronica leaned to look at the book, Ben was about halfway through it.
But when Veronica looked up, she saw Olivia staring at her. She raised an eyebrow a little bit, but Olivia just said, “Hey, can I talk to you?”
Immediately, Elaine’s anxiety spiked. Careful not to let it show on her face, she reassured herself that there was no way Olivia knew about them, that wasn’t possible. It was probably a family thing. Shifting next to Ben, she threw Veronica a reassuring look and peered at the pages.
Olivia pulled Veronica around the corner, scowling a little, “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me. We’re cousins, we don’t keep secrets.” Veronica paled. No no no no no, how did she find out? What do I do, what do I do, shoot- “It’s not like you could’ve hid it for long, all your crushes are as plain as day.” She didn’t know what to say, what to do. Olivia found out, it was over. There was no use in lying about it, now her parents would find out nd everything would be ruined. “I still can’t believe you didn’t tell me you liked Ben!”
Relief washed over her body, and her shoulders sagged, but she managed to keep up the look of worry on her face, “Oh, w-was it that n-noticeable?”
“Of course! I can’t wait to set you two up!” Olivia exclaimed, a grin appearing on her face.
“I-I really don’t think that’s a good-“ But Olivia was already tugging her back to the group.
(Oh damn)
Elaine glanced up when the two returned, her eyes asking Veronica a silent question. She seemed… unsettled. Panicked, even.
(Lol
Also, btw sorry I’ve been so busy lately and haven’t been replying super quickly >_<)
Veronica pursed her lips, shaking her head a subtly as she could. But Olivia took the liberty of ‘accidentally’ bumping into Veronica and pushing her into Ben’s side. He almost dropped his book, putting his arm on Veronica’s shoulder to ‘steady’ her, “Woah, careful, you okay?”
“Uh, yeah, I’m fine,” Veronica hastily responded, taking a step away from Ben. Olivia was clearly having a hard time trying to hide her smile, but Ben didn’t seem to notice.
