Alex caught it out of pure reflex. "You've got a good throw" he commented. Watching her carefully he pulled a soft clith out of his bag and began to clean and polish the flute.

"Thanks. I throw Discus during Track season, but that's about it. As you found out earlier, I'm not the fastest runner, so sprints and distance are large passes for me." Melanie joked halfheartedly, staring off into space, thinking.
Alex smiled, "Well you can't really blame yourself on the running part." He said, "I have a majorly unfair advantage on that one"
"Oh, shut up. That means I'm complimenting you. Unless you want me to say, 'I hate you,' then don't tell me about your 'unfair advantages.' But, one day, I will win at something going against you." Melanie poked him in the shoulder, only to return to her honeycrisp apple.
Alex laughed, "I'm pretty sure the only thing you'll ever win at is highest grades in school!" He laughed.
"And," getting expelled the most? He won't want to hear that… "having a larger-than-life temper." Melanie avoided the glances and chitchat from the other students. It was easier to do when she talked with Alex.
"I might rival you on that one." He said, "or at least my older brothers would beg to differ."
"Okay, that's because I didn't know what else to do but run, and my head was turning a hundred miles a minute. I wasn't scared of you or anything, I just wanted to see what would happen if I challenged you." Melanie lied. She'd never admit to being scared of anything, not even to Alex. Not yet, at least.
"Hey.. I'd be running too in your position"he said gently, sensing the lie.
"You don't need to treat me like I'm fragile. I've taken a beating before." Both verbal and physical, but a beating nevertheless… Melanie sighed, idly tapping her fingers on the table.
"Y'know you're more confusing than my twin sister…" said Alex, who honestly hadn't been trying to pamper or treat her like she was fragile.
"Nice to know you have siblings. I'm an only child myself. It gets pretty boring sometimes, but I like the quiet. Unlike here." Melanie gestures all around the Cafeteria, where students were talking and yelling all over the place.
"I have way too many siblings" said Alex. "You're lucky to be an only child"
"I'm lucky? I have no one to talk to, no one to comfort me when I have a cruddy day. My mom…she couldn't care less. As long as I'm not dead, she's fine." Melanie rolled her eyes. "You're lucky to have siblings. I get that you'd fight a lot, but you still have heart-to-heart conversations sometimes."
"You have a mom. Mine is gone. I don't even remember what she looks like." He said almost automatically. He hated when people said he was lucky to have a caring family. "My brothers care sure, but they're all busy trying to lead wolfpacks and me and my twin sister are busy trying to hide from our twin brother who happens to be a murderous whacko." He sighed,
"Okay. My dad…I won't bring anything up. You win. You have the crappiest family. Congrats." Melanie bit the inside of her cheek. Not everything's a competition, Melanie. You know that, she chastised herself. "So, what did you expect to get from me? An, 'I'm okay' card?" Melanie tried to change the topic.
Alex sighed, "Sorry.. It just came out, I didn't mean to lash out." he said, "I just miss them is all."
"I'm-" sorry? Sorry that you understand him? That you've missed someone for the longest time, knowing that they can never come back? "You didn't lash out. I do that more often than you, and I jump at the chance to do it. Don't bother apologizing when it should be me. That says nothing of whether I will or not." Melanie looked at Alex seriously, her eyes softened from her usual scowl.
Alex sighed, "As much as I miss them I can't help but be mad at them too…" he said, "Older siblings are supposed to protect you right?"
"I guess. I wouldn't really know, though." Melanie looked at him curiously. "You don't have to tell me everything if you don't want to."
"Eh.. It's just that I'm both the youngest and the strongest in my family." He said, "When it comes down to it I'm the one protecting them…. but what happens when I fail?"
"Well, you know you can always beat me, right?" Melanie attempted at a joke, but she knew Alex was serious. "I don't know. I'm not the person to talk to. Honestly, if you're doing the best you can, I don't see how you could fail. Stay focused, keep all of your oppressors in mind, keep throwing them off guard, and don't let anyone surprise you. That's all I got."
Alex laughed weakly at that. "Thing is is that my worst enemy is my twin. And he's the one that keeps taking me off guard."
"What exactly does he want? Full control of the world? For humans to cower in fear? I swear to god, I probably wouldn't even flinch at the sight of him!" Melanie was somewhat skeptical, finding it hard to believe that Alex could lose at something other than his IQ.
"He wants me dead." Said Alex flatly. "And he'll do anything to get under my skin. Draw me out, and hurt me."
