“Come on then.” I grumbled, watching her get her stuff before beginning to walk towards the nearby park.
“Come on then.” I grumbled, watching her get her stuff before beginning to walk towards the nearby park.
Where was he taking me? We both know how stupid of an idea this was… but maybe that was why we were carrying on with it. For that nugget of… freedom. Or was I reading too far into this?
“Where are we going?” I spoke after several minutes of silence, falling into step with him.
“The park. There’s a bench off an old path no one uses. I go there a lot.” I replied curtly, not wanting her to realize the place was special to me. “We’re almost there.”
“……Okay, then,” I muttered under my breath, allowing my eyes to trace over the tiny marks in the concrete below our feet.
“Geez, I got it. You don’t like it when I’m in charge. Give me five minutes.” I teased lightly, looking straight ahead.
“I’m just confused,” I muttered under my breath, eyeing the small distance between us.
“Good.” I looked around as we entered the park, taking a sharp left and cutting through the grass towards a path the was hidden by some large rocks.
I only focused on the grass at my feet, suddenly afraid to lift my head. Why, I had absolutely no idea.
What’s happening to me?
I led her over to the bench, out of sight from people and cameras. I sat down, leaving plenty of room so she could sit as far away as she wanted to. “This is it. Not much, but it does the job.”
“Are we just going to…. sit here..?” A thought suddenly crossed my mind, causing my body to go rigid. “If you brought me here to get information out of me, you’re wasting your time.”
I rolled my eyes, ignoring her as I opened up one of the front pockets in my bag, pulling out a ziplock bag filled with candy. I put it on the bench next to me with a gruff “Take what you want.”
“You’re being weirdly nice to me…” Bu even so, a smile tugged at my lips. I reached into the bag, withdrawing a caramel. “It’s cool, actually…”
“This never happened and means nothing, by the way.” I took on my annoyed tone that I usually reserved for Romeo. “And I… I guess it’s cool. It’s a good place to read.” I reached into the bag and grabbed a piece of dark chocolate.
I popped the caramel into my mouth. “Yeah, yeah, that goes without saying. You read?”
“Nope. I’m illiterate.” I responded dryly, raising my eyebrow as I turned to look at Marina.
“Hilarious,” I muttered trough a mouthful of caramel. “Favorite author?”
After a moment of hesitation I decided there was no harm in something as simple as small talk. “Philip Pullman. You?” I reached for another piece of chocolate in the bag.
“Steven King. And Patrick Ness. Isn’t Phillip Pullman that guy who wrote… ah, what was it called….” I trailed off. “Oh! The Golden Compass?”
“Yeah, it’s a great book. Everyone only knows it by the movie when there’s actually a series. The Amber Spyglass is my favorite. But I guess—“ I cut myself off when I realized I started to rant.
I leaned over to poke his shoulder without realizing the consequences of the stupid action. “Why’d you stop?”
I tensed as she poked my shoulder. “You don’t want to hear me ramble. Or hear me at all.” I looked away fairly quickly, bending down to pick up a pebble and toss it, watching it skitter and throw dust into the air.
I pulled my hand away, staring at it for a moment before placing it in my lap. “If you’re not going to talk, this is going to be a pretty boring encounter.
“There’s the top energy.” I teased, taking a nibble of the chocolate in my hand.
(awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww)
I choked on my caramel and erupted into a loud, hacking cough, my face beet red.
