M gave a slight nod back and scanned a card from his case, opening a set of doors. He pushed it open and held it for her, gesturing. Whenever she scooted in, they were introduced to a long hall ending in an elevator. The hall was shiny and a pristine white, sparkling. There hung paintings with soft-looking carpets laying on the ground. He led her over to one of the only office rooms on the floor and opened the doors with another swipe of the card. His room looked much more… personalistic. It was messy with wrappers of food littering around the trash can, as well as crumpled up balls of papers. Paintings of beautiful seashores and mountainous peaks as well as a couple cat paintings hung there too. The room was dressed in a fancy black carpet with a light gray rug. The walls were painted a deep gray color, and the windows were shut and shuttered.
Rai entered the dimly lit room, inspecting each decoration. She made a lap around the room. Looking at the detail within the paintings, reading any book title or paper that was set out on the desk. The strange life of a detective. These cats are rather adorable though.
Rai took a seat in a spare chair when she finished looking. "You've got quite the office, M. Speaking of, is M your full name? Or does it stand for something?"
(Oh shit he also has like, tons of books in his room. And just random shoes lying around with no socks or laces)
M strode across his room and sat in his chair with a sigh. He relaxed back into it and shut his eyes.
“My name? No, M is not my full name. It does stand for something, I will say.”
(haha thank you)
Rai brought her legs up onto the chair. She frowned at the cryptic answer, but decided to brush it off for now. Ask him your questions. You're curious, right? So ask him. Adventures need questions and questions can have answers.
"Are you human?" Rai said gently, eyeing the man.
M grabbed a book from his desk and curled up in his chair. The book was on butterflies.
“Nope,” He answered, once again, vaguely.
No surprise there. So why are you here? Is that a butterfly?
She kept her gaze on M despite his eyes being focused on the book. "Then what are you?"
(It’s legitimately cannon, btw, that M’s favorite book is a butterfly book.)
M grinned into the pages. She sounded very confused. Apparently grown men can’t enjoy a book on their favorite insect.
“Do you really want to know what I am?”
(THAT IS ADORABLE THANK YOU SO MUCH)
Rai cocked her head, wondering if he was truly able to multi-task that well. I wish I could read a book while holding a conversation. "What a silly question! I ask because I want to know. Otherwise, why would I ask? C'mon, tell me! What are you!" she prompted, throwing her feet off of the chair in excitement.
(Lmao you’re welcome ^-^
I even have the title written down.)
M chuckled softly and flipped a page, running a finger over an intricate painting of a butterfly wing.
“I do not think you want to know.”
(omg whats the title)
Rai smiled, amused with M's words. "Oh, but that's where you're wrong. I wanna know everything. Twelve years of my life spent only knowing science and nothing more. Now I'd like to know it all, including what you are," she challenged, determined to get it out of him.
(The Arts of a Butterfly; The Chronicles of Wingwork Deluxe (Butterfly): Book 3.)
M hummed slowly and flipped the page of his well-worn book. “Unfortunately sheer determination is not going to get you to my species. I still think you don’t want to know what I am.”
(absolutely beautoful :') )
"How can I prove it to you?" Rai asked. She wondered if she should tell him about her 'power.' Maybe if he doesn't tell me about himself, I might as well. He'd understand right? First, I have to try harder to get him to tell me his kind. I have to know.
(Thanks.)
M smirked into his book. He knew through many years of pestering how to hold through on what he was.
“If you want to know so bad, why not just ask politely?” He set his book down, his smirk gone.
(I might have to sleep after this)
Rai was taken aback by his response. Was I not polite? What did I even say? I can't remember. She straightened her back and looked to M. "Sir, if you would, I'd like to know what species you are," Rai chimed. Is that better? Oh, M, my curiosity is killing me!
(Kk)
M set his hands under his chin. “Hmmm… okay, I’ll tell you. I’m a Reader. But it doesn’t affect my work. Apart from when people are talking loud or thinking spastically. It kinda bothers me, really, being one of the more powerful Mind Readers.”
(ok after THIS I'm sleeping haha but this is the last week of school, and then finals, and then I'll have plenty of time to rp!)
Immediately, Rai began to wonder what thoughts of hers he heard. That's how he must have spotted me.
"Does mind-reading come with the ability to not get hurt?" her hair started to get static, as Rai's energy was building up with excitement from meeting a Mind Reader. Someone with something special! I'm not alone!
(Lmao good luck m8)
“Ehhhh….. no. That’s something that’s just me.” He chuckled softly. “Not all Mind Readers are invincible like my brother and I.” He leaned forward in the chair to look at her better.
“You seem to be very excited about something.”
(thanks ill need it)
Rai tucked her hair behind her ears, aware of the flyaways. "Well if you can read my mind, then you should know." She tapped her chin to show she was thinking. "Do you have a flashlight or a working lamp in here? I'll show you one of my magic tricks."
M glanced up at her, his icy blue chips sparkling slightly in the dullness of his eyes.
“Are you challenging me?” It certainly sounded like a challenge. She was acting like he could only read surface thoughts.
Rai furrowed her brow. "No, sir, you've got me all wrong. I just want to show you something cool, that's all. Pinky promise. Now, a light source, if you will?" she sent M a genuine smile.
M pointed up to his ceiling titty light. “Light source. Unless you want one you csn destroy, go ahead and do the whole builing. If you can.” He grinned. “I don’t want you to overwork yourself.”
She cocked her head. Destroy? What a silly man! As much as I could, I can't afford to be arrested. "Please," Rai smirked, "I know my limits." She picked up the chair she had been sitting on and placed it under the light. With her small, delicate feet, Rai hopped onto the chair and reached towards the ceiling light. Rai focused a small sum of her energy into the light, rearranging the material to emit a soft blue wavelength instead. The room was no longer the strong office white, but rather the shallows of an ocean. She stepped back onto the ground to admire her handiwork, then looked to M for his reaction. I hope you like blue.
M kept his expression dull and hidden but he felt impressed. He knew a few eletric elementalists who could shift color of light. It was really quite neat.
“Nice. Thanks for the room change.”
Rai moved the chair back to its original space. Her hair was still slightly static, but it had lessened. "I used to be ashamed of it. The thing is, I didn't get the power naturally and the process of getting it was not with my consent. Nonetheless, I learned to accept it I guess," Rai sat back down, reexamining the room in the new shade. "Anyways, what's the plan now?"
