he watched her come back down. he had heard the struggle, and he assumed he was dead.
"lead the way to the next place."

"lead the way to the next place."
"It's a woman this time," Tessa informed him, slightly more detached than she had been before. "One of the mayor's old secretaries."
"fun. what'd she do?" he followed her out of the building.
She shrugged, squinting up at the sun. "I dunno. I'm just the sword the Mafia wields. Don't ask too many questions if it doesn't help the job."
"fair, but my job is to ask questions." he teased. "professional nosy sewer rat."
She offered a small smile, emotions still somewhat turned off. "True."
"same game plan with her?" he inquired, walking quietly next to her. he enjoyed spending time with tess, even if it was on,,, murder missions,,,
"I'll have to see what's available to me, but essentially." She sighed, rubbing at her temples. "This was easier when I didn't have anything left…"
he was tempted to ask what she meant, but he had a feeling he knew. "you can use my knife if worst comes to worst." he suggested, trying his damn best to be helpful.
"I'll consider it." She might have to stop at one of the abandoned labs to remind herself of what she fought for. To remind her heart why she killed and tortured.
after a while of walking, he quietly spoke up. "you look upset, love. if you want to talk about it when this is over, i'll listen."
She just shook her head–not as a no, just at her thoughts and situation. "It's nothing, really. Just need a reminder later." She took a shaky breath in, then let it out.
"reminder?" he muttered, puzzling it together in his head. he reached some realization, but didn't have time to react before they reached the door.
"lead the way."
She kicked in the door with a little more force than needed. But she needed to vent some way, and the poor door was the immediate target. A woman screeched and a man shouted. Tessa wasn't really seeing as she grabbed two kitchen knives and charged.
They were dead within seconds, each with a slash over their throats and mouths agape with silent screams. Tessa dropped the bloody knives, her fingers sticky with the thick, red liquid. She stared at the bodies, not seeing them.
nik swallowed, watching with glazed over eyes. his hand clutched his knife against his shirt, but he recovered quickly and flipped it back inside itself.
"i assume that was the target. if not, we might be in trouble."
"It was her," Tessa said blankly, now completely disconnected with reality and emotions. This always happened when she killed. She slowly lost herself until she was nothing but a shell. A weaponized shell.
Her gaze slowly slid up to Nik.
he stayed silent, nodding in relief. he met her gaze, eyes glazed. "you should tell them. tell them you succeeded."
"Sì. But after I go somewhere." She stepped over the bodies and headed over to the sink, cleaning off her hands. Her fingerprints have been long burned away, so she didn't worry about the knives.
nik went to replace the knives, and then rubbed at his hands to stop himself. he still has fingerprints. as they reached the doorway, he gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"for luck. don't die, wherever you're going."
"An abandoned laboratory. One that I was imprisoned in." The corner of her lips twitched up slightly at the light kiss. "But thanks."
"ah. inspiration?" he chose not to mention to negative psychological effects. that comes later. she's still a killer, and still thinks she has to pay it back. he felt his phone buzz, probably a notification for a new article that has something to do with their scandal. he'd read it later.
She looked off in the distance. "To remind myself why I kill and torture. To remind myself of those still suffering while I'm free. That I have to do what they're too afraid to do."
nik paused to process what she said, and looked softly back up at her. "that's a fair point. if you need me, i'll be by the ramen place." he waited for her to leave first, not wanting to be rude.
She opened her mouth to say he could go, then closed it. "Could you–" She pinched her lips together. She didn't want to ask him something like that. She was growing too dependent on Nik, and this was something she always did alone.
But why was she suddenly feeling too scared to be alone right now?
"i'll come with you, if you want." he suggested. he was afraid it'd get him punched, but there were only a few things she was likely to ask him at that moment, and that was one of them.
