Alex started to eat a little bit, mostly just picking at his food.
Martha looked at Alex a moment.
"Gabe must give you a hard time about how much you eat."
Alex shrugged a little bit. "Sometimes." he replied softly.
"Has he told you why?" Martha asked.
He shook his head wordlessly, taking another small bite of food. He really didn't eat enough; hadn't in years, which was evidenced by the hollowed-out look in his face, the way the bones of his wrists jutted out.
"He had lost a friend to self starvation a while back," Martha explained.
He blinked. "Oh." he replied softly, looking down at his plate for a moment.
"It was really hard on him." Martha shook her head.
"I…I'm sure it was."
"Since then, he's been big on eating properly. He normally doesn't let those with these problems stay with him. I guess you're just special." Matthew have Alex an 'i told you so' look.
Alex nodded slightly. "I-it's not…I just…" he shook his head a little bit.
Martha sighed a bit.
"You must have grown on him."
Alex shrugged. "I…guess so."
Martha finished with her food, Matthew following suit.
Alex was quiet, still picking at his food.
Martha left the room, leaving Alex and Matthew alone.
"Told you," Matthew said smugly.
Alex shook his head a little bit.
"You're special." Matthew wasn't budging.
"I'm not." he replied softly.
"Are too." He sat down next to Alex.
"I'm not, Matthew."
"Are. Too," Matthew insisted.
"I'm not." Alex insisted, lips tightening.
"Are. Too!" Matthew huffed.
He shook his head, looking down at his plate. "Matthew, I'm not."
