"I get it. I hate new things. Freaks me out."
"I get it. I hate new things. Freaks me out."
"Mm… something we have in common, then."
"I'd say we probably have a lot in common, but you don't want to make it seem like we could be friends."
"That's not true…" Four looked away for a moment. "The… the person each of us was forced to be by the code isn't always who we actually are…"
"I doubt that would make a significant difference. The only reason I wouldn't be your friend is if you were a serial killer."
"Ah, okay then…" Four trailed off, looking back up at the screen again.
"I'm going to interpret that as companionable silence," she said and got up. "I'll be right back. I won't turn off the phone."
"Thank you," Four said softly. He wasn't sure if he could handle much of this at all.
Orion returned with a book and a cup of water and tucked her feet under her legs. "Okay. Here we are."
"Indeed…" Four trailed off. He wasn't sure what was expected of him, what he was to say. The Code had always ended up doing that for him…
"So, Four. Have you ever dated anybody?"
"No," Four admitted. "There's never been anyone to date."
"Fair enough." She shrugged. "Have you ever. . . been on a waterslide? Probably not."
"No, no I haven't. There aren't any in here…" Four looked up shrugging some.
"You should make one. Waterslides are fun."
"That's uh, that's not really how this place works," Four said softly, not looking up now.
"Oh. Well. Sorry. I didn't know that."
"It's fine," Four said, shrugging.
"If you don't mind my asking, what is it like? Your. . .place."
"Well, there isn't much to it. There's here, the fronting room, and then our 'bedrooms.' They're mostly just restraining cages for when we're not out."
"Oh. Well, that sucks. Maybe I can change that?"
"I won't stop you from trying," Four said. He looked to the side, letting out a long breath.
"It's close to five now, but… I have no idea if I'll actually have to leave, with the Code being suspended."
"I suppose we'll find out, won't we? I'll wait for you to come back tomorrow before I start messing with the code."
"Thank you," Four said. He offered a smile, relaxing some.
"You're welcome. Four, I hope you know that I'm trying to help you," she said genuinely. "This is weird for me too."
