Rowan nodded a bit, resting his head against Matthew's chest. "Alright, good… I don't want him to kill them."

"We'll make sure he won't." Matthew smiled faintly, Rowan's head resting under the top of his chin.
(It a go for the eggs?)

After a while, Rowan heard cracking and looked down at the eggs. "Matthew! Stop the horse! The eggs are hatching!"

Matthew looked up, bringing the horses to a stop. He picked Rowan up, bringing them all off the horse. He set Rowan down, kneeling to look at the eggs. He pulled out the bag of food for them, pulling out a wriggling grub. He crushed the head, ready for Rowan.
"Make sure you hold them first," Matthew explained. "Get them used to you!"

Rowan nodded and sat down on the grass with the nest in his lap, watching the eggs closely. Soon, one of the eggs cracked open and a bird tumbled out. "W-What the hell??" Rowan asked, bewildered. "What's wrong with these birds??"

Matthew watched, smiling gently as he sat next to Rowan. He looked up when Rowan spoke, confused.
"There's nothing wrong with them," Matthew said. "They look really healthy, actually." He smiled again, looking down at the baby.
"Here, go on and pick her up. You won't hurt her."

"They look like tiny people??" Rowan still seemed so confused as he gently picked up the little bird. "Birds don't look anything like this where I'm from…"

The chick was barely the size of Rowan's thumb, nuzzling up against him and making small chirping noises. Her eyes were closed.
"Really?" Matthew asked, a bit surprised by this. "That's what all birds look like here…"

"Ours are way different… they look nothing like people." Despite himself, Rowan smiled down at the strange little chuck, rubbing its head gently with one finger. "I'll show you a picture when we're through with this…"

"Okay then..!" Matthew spoke gently, keeping his voice low. The other two eggs were starting to crack, the chicks trying to get out.
"Here, give this to her." Matthew handed over the dead grub, watching the chick as she nuzzled against Rowan's finger as she started to chirped louder.

Rowan grimaced at the sight of the grub, but accepted it anyway and dangled it over the chick's head. "Here you go… you hungry?" He asked softly.

The chick tilted her head up, reaching out to grab the grub. She started eating it, curled up in Rowan's hand. The other two eggs were almost hatched by this point.
"Don't forget the others," Matthew said gently.

Rowan turned his attention to the other eggs while the first chick was eating. A second chick tumbled out of his shell and Rowan smiled softly, gently running his head as well.

Matthew smiled as the chick tumbled out, arm around Rowan gently. He pulled out another grin, killing it for the next chick. The chick leaned into the petting, arms going up around Rowan's finger and holding it tightly as they let out a quiet trill.

"They're still pretty cute, even if they're not quite what I expected." Rowan smiled gently as he fed the second chick a grub. "And you said they look healthy?"

The second chick greatfully accepted the grub, munching on it happily. The first chick finished, chirping a bit again and trying to crawl up Rowan's arm to get to his face.
"Yes, they look amazing!"

Rowan giggled a bit as he watched the chick, happily allowing her to climb. She wasn't hurting him anyway. "Definitely strong. The third one's almost hatched too…"

Matthew smiled.
"Yes…" The first chick managed to get to Rowan's shoulder, trying to get up further. She tried to use his collar to climb up, but with a surprised sound fell down, tumbling safely down. Thankfully, she didn't hurt herself, but she was very confused. The second chick clung to Rowan's finger again, yawning a bit. The third chick finally broke free, yawning loudly and not even bothering getting out of the eggshell yet. Matthew laughed lightly.
"They're going to be quite the handful!" He commented.

"Yeah… they're very adventurous." Rowan laughed, helping the third chick out of his egg. "Can you grab me another grub for this one, please?" He asked Matthew softly. "He might be hungry…"

The third chick mumbled nonsense to himself, curling up in Rowan's hand with a happy sound. Matthew nodded, laughing lightly and picking up a grub for the chick.
"Do you think you'll need help with them..?"

"Help in what way?" Rowan asked, carefully feeding the grub to the third chick. "I'll probably keep them in the nest while we're riding… they're too little to be doing much yet."

The third chick wrapped his arms around the grub, lazily taking a bite. The first one was still in Rowan's lap, blinking a bit before getting back up, trying to climb out and away from Rowan to explore already.
"She doesn't seem to think so," Matthew says with a chuckle. "Well, if I handle them now, they'd get familiarized with me too, kind of like a co parent. And with these three you might need it." He smiled softly.

"True… you don't need to be wandering off right now." Rowan carefully moved the chick back into the nest. "I think they can already see you… what else are you gonna do?"

The chick hugged a bit, sticking her head out from the best to try to go exploring again.
"Well, since they're obviously bonded to you already, me picking them up next will give a weaker sense of that about me too."

Rowan nodded a bit. "No venturing out of the nest unless you're with me or Matthew, okay? You're too little to be out by yourself." He picked up the adventurous first chick and set her in Matthew's hands.
