Matthew listened quietly, handing Rowan his share of the food.
"I… I'm sorry, but I don't think I could survive in a world like that."
Matthew listened quietly, handing Rowan his share of the food.
"I… I'm sorry, but I don't think I could survive in a world like that."
"Yeah, I guess it takes some getting used to…" Rowan accepted the food from Matthew and started to eat. "There's a lot of pretty places on earth. I just… wouldn't say that New York is one of them."
Matthew nodded. He moved his fingers over his wings once, a nervous habit of his.
"Why did you stay, then? You're willing to move here, and convince your mother to as well, so why not in your own world?"
Rowan sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Well, I don't exactly have a lot of money, and moving is both expensive and a huge pain… money's kinda really important where I'm from, so…"
"I… oh. I see. Well, you don't have to worry about that here! You'll be able to move into the village free of charge." Matthew winked a bit, then looked away.
Rowan flushed a bit and nodded. "Thanks, Matthew… I'll try my best to convince her. Do you think Maisie will be okay here?" He asked.
"You're dog? I'm sure they will!" Matthew pulled his hand away from his wings. "And I'm sure your mother will come when she sees how much you want to."
Rowan nodded again. "I hope you're right… I mean, this is kind of a big decision… I take it that there aren't exactly very many humans here?"
Matthew shook his head a bit.
"I'd never seen one, before meeting you. But I'm glad I did." he offered a small smile.
"And… if you don't end up staying here, that's okay to."
"Yeah… it's… it's a lot, but I dunno… I mean, I've been thinking about moving for a while, it's just so sudden… I'll have to think about it."
Matthew nodded.
"Okay then… I won't push you into it." He smiled faintly.
"Thanks, Matthew… I'll have to talk to my mom as well. It's kinda important to me for her to be okay with all this…"
"Of course. She obviously means so much to you." he offered a weak smile again, finishing his food.
"She really does." Rowan smiled weakly as well. "She raised me, you know? And she did it well. It's the least I can do."
"I totally understand! It's nice to see you care so much for your mother." Matthew smiled gently, looking away a moment.
Rowan nodded and finished up with his dinner. "I'm excited for you to meet her. I think y'all will hit it off."
"I think so too. We did, after all." Matthew smiled, sitting back a bit.
"Yeah… I'd talk to anyone. Mom says I'm gonna get hurt again if I'm not a little more careful, but… you know. I like being nice."
"Again..?" Matthew watched Rowan a moment, a little concerned. "Is it… Okay if I ask?"
Rowan flushed a bit and looked away. "Um… I-I just… had a few less than kind romantic partners… and I was at the coffee shop when it got robbed that one time, so… still have a scar from that."
Matthew moved a bit more towards Rowan, frowning softly.
"How could someone ever hurt you…"
Rowan huddled up against Matthew's side. "U-Um… New York isn't exactly the safest place, I guess?"
Matthew hesitantly put this arm around Rowan, feeling protective.
"I'm sorry about that…"
"It's not your fault, Matthew… that's just how it is on earth. It's dangerous. Luckily, that's the only time I've been involved in a robbery… not as the robber, obviously."
"I… Earth sounds so dangerous," Matthew whispered softly, holding Rowan close.
