Babe's tapping gained speed, before stopping suddenly as she decided on a song. She slipped off the counter, muttering something about fresh air as she headed for the door.
Henry watched her for a split second before jumping up to follow her through the crowd. "Babe, wait!" But his voice was lost in the crowd.
Babe slipped outside, hands moving like she was playing invisible keys as she leaned against the glass window of the store, taking a deep breath. You can do this. It's just a stage. Nevermind what happened last time, this isn't the past.
Henry came up next to her, standing near her and looking down at her with concern. "Babe, if you really don't want to do it, you don't have to."
"A promise is a promise." Babe said, looking up at him. "I'm just nervous. The last time I got up on stage…was the night dad left. It's stupid, but I can't get the anxiety out of my stomach. Promise…promise me you'll stick around till I'm done?"
"Of course. I'll be right there next to the stage." He leaned closer to her, giving her an awkward side hug. "Besides, you got this. You'll be the best singer out there."
"I highly doubt that." She said, shooting him a look as she leaned into the hug. "But I should get it over with. C'mon."
"Alright." Henry lead the way back into the crowd, where number 10 was just finishing up. He gave Babe and encouraging smile and followed her closer to the stage.
"One thing I've never liked about karaoke is that you have to go by the music from the machine." Babe mused, looking up at the stage, and the karaoke machine by the edge. "I'd much rather use my guitar."
"That makes sense." Henry nodded to her, slowly getting more eager as number 10 finished his song and hopped off the stage.
"What's your number? Because there's no way I'm letting you get out of doin' it too." Babe looked over at him, raising an eyebrow.
Henry looked at her. "I have a number? Babe, I can't sing." He looked at her, borderline panicking but not yet.
"Neither can I, and you're still throwin' me up there." Babe said, narrowing her eyes at him.
"Babe, you can sing. I, on the other hand, can't. That's why these are two very different things, and also, it's your turn, so you better go up." Henry nodded towards the stage.
"I will shave your eyebrows off." Babe threatened, chewing on her lip before climbing up onto the stage. She glared down at Henry as she fiddled with the machine, but her face softened as the music began. "Sleep on me, feel the rhythm in my chest, just breathe. I will stay, so the lantern in your heart won't fade." She began softly, looking a bit more relaxed.
Henry couldn't keep himself from swaying from the music and bouncing with it sometimes. He clapped wildly when she was done, grinning at her and lifting his hands above his head to clap along with everyone else.
Babe's cheeks were red as she finished, passing the microphone to the next singer as she hopped off the stage. She kept her eyes on the ground, chewing on her bottom lip as she made her way to Henry.
Henry's enthusiasm was growing, and he hugged Babe once she was close enough. "You were amazing!"
Babe let out a small squeak as she was pulled into a hug, her blush deepening. "I d-don't know, I was a bit pitchy on that last verse…"
Henry held her an arm's length away, raising an eyebrow at her. "You were fantastic. No criticizing, I'm busy being proud of you."
"Alright, alright." Babe shook her head, a smile tugging at her lips. "It was fun, I'll give you that. I love that song, honestly."
"So you'll do it again next time?" Henry asked hopefully, already anticipating her answer. He wasn't going to be pressuring her into anything else anytime soon.
Babe snorted, shaking her head. "Yeah, I guess I will. We should do a team karaoke thing, at some sort of bonding event. I want to see Kevin singin' a Disney song." She said, eyes lighting up with mirth. "If you aren't gonna go up there, any chance you'd be willin' t' just hang out with me?"
"Sure, I'd love to. Any ideas for where?" Henry started towards the door, making sure Babe was following him.
