I LOVE stupidly specific medieval magic systems, but they suck to make actually work.
Like, how do you make a wizard who can only cast spells on blue moons on Tuesdays at 8pm if the sun is still out and the planets align work.
That's true, but 'skittle man' now evokes… particular imagery XD
Take it as a compliment! There's not many "(related word) + Man" nicknames out there that I can think of.
Off the top of my head, there's Hampter Man (me) and Shadow Man (Vis).

oh that sounds very painstaking. my worlds have no specific magic system, some ppl do one kind of magic, some ppl do another, most can't do much. the thing I gotta put more into is the Winged People.

I've been thinking of having my "magic system" more genetic-based since it's more of a "regular non-magic dweeb x cool magic dork" crossbreed thing. Of course, that brings up the issue of explaining in a way that doesn't sound like a Biology lesson.

I've been into cat genetics lately, and it's 1000% bleeding into my other interests- agh.

I used to make such intricate systems but now I'm like anyone can get cursed for literally anything, that's a sea monster yes it will curse you (or it might not who knows), oh shit the moon is red no one look at it, etc etc… barely anyone uses magic, it's more avoided than used for what I write lmao
I love reading about magic systems though. mmmm limitations ❤️❤️

Intentionally absurd magic systems are also fantastic
Like there could be a wizard and he can only cast one super powerful spell, and it's so scary that everyone is shaking and quaking in fear, and turns out the spell is just he can turn into a wheel of cheese
BUT IT WORKS because everyone just so happens to be lactose intolerant or something-

He (as a wheel of cheese) rolls at 170 mph and runs over his enemies, effectively flattening them like in those cat and mouse cartoons

Looking back at my Idea Development Dump and, wow, the Everchill has changed a lot since I first started planning, what? A year ago?
First and foremost, Nav (series pov protag) used to be a phoenix. I decided to make the phoenix his pet, and now he's just a boring human. (Lame.)
The story used to just be one series, and it was focused solely on war. Now it's two, and the war is a driving force, but there's other stuff happening, too.
I think I'm going to retcon Cadastern (Nav's half-sister). Or, like, just get rid of her. Can't think of any point she'd be important to the plot besides maybe Book One side-character?
Rhiv's entire family taking up a decent portion of my main characters was definitely not something I had in mind-
ok here's an excerpt from my story Tuneless! might change the name, idk. which reminds me–
vote for the name of this story! help me pick, I cant choose.
Tuneless– because it is a world where creativity is outlawed, so no creative music is made.
Anarchy– because that's the name of a group dedicated to taking down the government, who is forbidding all art. And it's more dramatic.
just let me know what you guys think! I like both these names but I cant pick on my own.
Opinions on flashbacks in writing? And how often is too often?
The story I’m creating is set in a certain time, but I’m thinking in order for readers to figure out backstory and stuff I’ll be having quite a few flashbacks in the form of memories or something (mainly because I’ve created a lot of stuff that was set before the current timeline, and I need some way to incorporate it into the current story). But I also don’t want to overdo it.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
