Yeah, I'm definitely guilty of dead parents. In my main project, I think Kit and Alexis are the only ones who still have parents who are both a) alive, and b) actually good parents.
I find though that I don't really kill off parents as much in things that take place in modern times. I have a project that I'm still planning but all the characters so far still have both parents (although, the MC's parents have recently divorced, and the other two characters are older and have moved out, so their parents aren't really present).
I have another fantasy thing that I'm planning and originally the main character's parents died early on in the story but recently I've been reconsidering. I'm starting to feel like it's a bit unnecessary, but at the same time keeping them alive would significantly lower the stakes for the MC so idk.

When an older character is introduced, teaches the main character an Important Life LessonTM, and then dies. I'm not really talking about mentor characters in fantasy and stuff, but of elderly (usually) characters in contemporary books. It's seriously gotten to the point where if an older character is mentioned, I start to guess how long it'll be before they're killed off.
When the author has clearly done no research about this thing that is very important because Sara Shepard I can only suspend my disbelief so far and let me tell you, it's not as far as this
