yeah I’m considering going into chemistry as a major in my college years and I’m taking philosophy in my senior year!

Flesh yourself out dude. Involving yourself in classes is probably most important. Learn different skills such as writing, too. It’s very important to know how to write a good essay

Also!!! If you remember I wrote something about GPAs not mattering. Well, they do matter, but if you remember I was at about 3.31 for my GPA at the beginning of the year.

I’m at 3.4 now about midway through the year. soooooooooooooo take that as you will

Also pick up a few instruments if you can! More than one. It’ll make you eligible for scholarships and it’s fun and stress relieving :)

I agree with everyone else. You need fun classes to balance out the more stressful mandatory ones.
And all that pressure to figure out what you want right now? Total BS. Don't listen to it. You're in an exploratory phase still, so do what you love, or do what you're curious about. Everything else will fall into place when it's ready. Take it from someone who had to switch their major halfway through college because they were miserable.
Applications and all that like to see genuine interest and well-rounded students. Anyone can go and take the hardest courses, thinking that's default "get you into college" material, but extracurriculars, unique interests, and other things also go incredibly far.

@moss

Yup, what everyone else said is good. Also, there are required classes you need to take at some schools so if your still stuck, you can always just do one of those.

@actual-fandom-trash

it's just something that's unnecessarily stressful for me but i would like to hear what classes you found fun, even if it does depend a lot on what the teachers are like!! (i'm gonna be a junior if that matters)

@Pickles group

Psych is great, if you have like a foods class that's fun too, if your school offers specific english classes like scifi lit or something, I recommend picking one of those instead of normal english cause it's a lot less dreadful. Also if your favorite teachers teach any electives

@tungsten fastfood

Okay so it might just be me or the teacher but I ADORED chemistry. My teacher was incredibly professional and understanding when it came to teaching us and lecturing us. She also hated the same kids I did :3

she also set her desk on fire the first day of class to highlight that chemicals look like water are probably not water

I also liked my Health class a lot. AP Lang is a lot of fun for me too. Mostly cus of teachers.

Specific English was awesome based on the three classes of it I took.

Psych seconded. I've only taken it in college, but I have friends who took it in high school and loved it. Forensic science. I had a horrible teacher for it and dropped the class (I was making good grades, he was just an asshole and I wasn't going to put up with his abuse.) I took Latin for fun. Uhhh, arts classes like visual arts, music, etc are cool. Computer science if you're interested (not my cup of tea, but I know a lot of people who love it!)
I also took anatomy. It was hard but a lot of fun. The same teacher taught zoology (which was also supposedly a lot of fun, while less difficult).
And I took a first aid course as well.
I will say I REALLY regret taking AP chemistry, while I didn't have the same regret with any of my other AP courses (except maybe calculus)

@tungsten fastfood

Same teacher for both chem classes, AP and Honors

I probably would’ve taken it anyway because of me wanting to major in chemistry so

but I second music!

@HighPockets group

Personally I'd recommend forensic sciences, any sort of legal studies course, and–of course–creative writing. Those have been my favorites so far this year

@croccin-champagne

do i have to mention criminal psychology again? lmao
personally have both liked and hated spanish teachers(just not teaching styles i liked) but foreign languages are cool!

i dont actually remember getting to take very many fun electives, honestly. that's part of why i am all for taking fun ones! i had to do credit ones, and then i dropped out and so i missed out on all of the ones i had been 'waiting for' in my later years. please dont do what i did

cries in former chemistry major
I feel like I also did forgo a lot of fun electives in favor of taking APs and hard courses. There are some things I regret not taking, especially because my mental health suffered because of me pushing myself too hard for the second half of high school and wanting to live up to everyone else's standards. I wish I'd played in jazz band. I wish I'd taken psychology and sociology. I wish I'd gotten better at Spanish. And I wish I'd been in visual arts rather than stuck on a piano track I would later lose my passion for.

@HighPockets group

I'm horrible at Spanish, which means I'll have to make up a foreign language credit in college :(
Personally I'd also recommend taking a foods course, or if your school offers some sort of money management or independent living course

@croccin-champagne

oh boy

honestly, it varies person to person. some people stand by going to highschool dances to experience them, others say its not worth it. I say, if you're trying to decide whether something is worth doing or not, just go for it. if its a dance, maybe get your outfit at a thrift store instead of spending hundreds on a single outfit, but just do it!

i think spirit weeks are fun to be a part of if you want to show you're proud of your school or just participate. if your language class has a field trip and you can afford it without worrying about financials for the rest of the year, do it.

decide what you want to experience in highschool. some people would rather go out to a movie than a football game. thats fine!

@Becfromthedead group

^^^
I wasn't one for school dances, but when prom came, I went to that.
I picked and chose school trips. It's kind of a matter of what you can afford/who's going. That's up to you, but I'd suggest going on at least one big school trip before you graduate if you're able.
If your school puts on musicals and plays and concerts, I'd totally try going to at least a couple, especially if you have friends in them.
And same with sports, I guess? I haven't been to any sports matches in high school or college aside from my own swim meets, but if that's your thing and you have friends to support, or friends to go with, go for it.

@Pickles group

Go to at least one homecoming (with friends or a group, not just you and a date), do at least a little bit of spirit week, and prom. If you get invited as someone's date as a freshman, don't go. That's suspicious. Definitely go see one of the musicals once, and try to be in one even if it's just chorus and you don't audition. If the talent show is your thing, audition for that, they can be fun and you get out of class. I guess do clubs if you're interested in them but honestly I find them kind of boring
As you can see, I'm filled to the brim with school spirit

@tungsten fastfood

If you hang out with the right people who make you feel comfortable and happy you won't have to worry about relationship nonsense. Honestly, coming from a junior in high school (soon to be senior), its not much different. High school is a time of change in the body so you're gonna do a lot of dumb shit, but you're also gonna grow as a person. You'll start doing things you're actually proud of and get new habits and meet new people as you prepare for the higher life of high education. It sucks but when you're taking classes that invigorate you, take part in things you love, and hang out with people who like you, you'll have a good hs experience. Just take chances on things you might not like and try to learn about yourself more than others.

let's revive this dead thread woop woop
Within the next few days, I have to decide between staying in the district I'm in now and moving to another district for early college. I'm really torn. The early college seems amazing, but I'm afraid it might move too fast and I'll have absolutely no friends there. Also, it has like no electives which sucks. The normal school will have my friends (and theater class lol), but it's just boring and slow. Any advice?

@croccin-champagne

oh boy

okay. so my personal opinion may fall into more of an outlier type, but here's some backstory to back it up.

i've never been a very 'long term friend' type of person. the connections i make tend towards casual and temporary due to me being an old soul(aka traumatized into maturity) because nobody really clicks. so friendship never would have been a thing to keep me in one place, honestly.

if i had been more academically inclined, i'd have jumped at an opportunity like that. have i ever mentioned being very self-serving? while i'm not sure if i can give you a straight up answer, because my opinion might not be the right thing for you, i need you to ask yourself whether or not this is going to be something you regret skipping. both of them, actually. if you go, will you regret it? if you don't, will you? will your friends support you and treat you the same?

also consider! are there other drama type programs you could get into, maybe through a community theater of some sort? are there ways to keep the things you love? do the research!

@HighPockets group

Maybe it's the Lady M*cbeth in me, but I'd go with the early college. You could still keep in touch with your old friends but have the opportunity to make new ones, and early college is a great option available to you.
