He chuckled softly, and nodded. "If I were one of the courts that permitted slavery, you would fetch a pretty penny." He frowned slightly. "Er, that was not the best way to phrase that. My apologies. I simply meant that yes, you are extraordinarily rare, and, well, most people say that the rarer something is, the more value it has."
His comment about her fetching a high price had her frowning, and almost shrinking in on herself, before he continued talking. "So I should watch my back." She said, still eyeing him warily as she tucked a loose chunk of hair behind her ear. "Because I'm rare. Kenathius, is it really too much to ask to be one thing or nothing? At least as just a changeling, I didn't have to fear being sold like a pig at a farmer's market."
He sighed. "That is not what I meant! I meant that we used to allow slavery, yes, but that was generations before I was born! It was abolished a very long time ago!" He shook his head. "None of the courts allow it anymore, you don't have to fear it." He sighed, shaking his head again and looking at the moon still.
Maybe I'd have an easier time believing what you say if you'd actually look at me. I can't read your eyes when I can't see them. Miyaki shrugged, returning to doodling, though not as idly as before. "And what were Halfbloods used for, 'way back when'?"
He looked down at the ground. "It…depended on the owner. Many viewed them as one would a prized show animal. To be dressed up and flaunted for special occasions. Others…would purchase them for…other things. They weren't used for manual labor like more common slaves. They were house slaves, prized pets, and…far more unspeakable things."
A snap echoed through the room as she closed her notebook a bit too hard, nodding. "Got it. I don't-need to hear more. I get it." She had a few different ideas of what those things might have been, and just the thought sent a few dark memories flickering through her mind. "That's good on that. Um-what else was it you wanted to teach me tonight?"
He shrugged slightly. "I didn't exactly have a lesson planned, just a few vague ideas. Have you any questions about anything at all?" He looked at her. "As you know, Fae can't lie. So I will answer your questions, when i can." His silver eyes hid all emotion, simply blank. His face and posture was, while not tense, not quite relaxed either.
She nodded, keeping her eyes on her closed notebook as she thought. “Alright then. It’s not really anything to do with the ‘lesson’, but still has to do with all of this.” She looked up, frowning slightly. “What exactly are your intentions in bringing me back to your Court? Because you seem awfully intent on doing so.”
Jin seemed slightly surprised by the question. "My…intentions?" He raised an eyebrow. "Nothing inappropriate, I assure you." He replied, looking at her. "Simply a wish to bring home one of my court." He shrugged slightly, turning to look up at the moon again. He really wasn't sure what to tell her. He couldn't tell her about her parent, or at least, who he suspected her parent was.
"That's not all of it." Miyaki stated, her tone making it obvious she was well assured of that. She had to be, had to learn to tell when the Fae were avoiding answering things or leaving certain bits out. "Why the hell would you want a Halfblood, let alone a changeling, in your Court or your land? Especially one you met yesterday. For all you know, I could use an of this information to conspire against you or whatever. Isn't that something to be wary of? Or have I been deemed no threat?"
Jin chuckled softly. "Persistent, I'll give you that." He replied. "One, i dont mind halfbloods. I…really don't." He gave a soft, rather enigmatic chuckle. "As for what I'm telling you…none of it is very vital information. None of it could potentially be dangerous. So no, I am not worried."
"Persistence keeps you on top in a Court like this." Miyaki said simply, crossing her arms under her chest after tucking her pen behind her ear, once again drawing attention to the slight points, and with more time to notice them, the piercings lining her ears. "You're just lucky you're Fae. If you were human, I'd have a harder time believing practically anything you say." She said, narrowing her eyes at him. "Not potentially dangerous. Good to know."
He turned and looked at her, raising his eyebrows slightly at the piercings. "You're welcome." He replied. "Now. Any other questions?" He asked, stretching. His neck popped slightly, and he dropped his arms to his sides, looking at her. His silvery eyes almost seemed…to carry the moon in them still.
Her eyes caught on his for a second, blinking at the sheer light in the silver. Then she shook her head slightly, clearing it and refocusing. "Not tonight, I don't think. I'll make a list though." She stretched her legs out before standing, and proceeding to stretch her arms as high as she could, lifting the tank top a fair amount in the process. "Can I get a head's up for the next 'lesson'? Is it going to be at night too? And what about?"
His eyes darted to the hem of the tank top for a moment, then back to her face. "Alright. And no, i do not have the next lesson planned out, so there are no warnings i can give you. I will let you know if it will happen at night, though." He chuckled softly, eyes flickering over her blatantly before returning to her face.
She blinked as she noticed his eyes flicker over her the second time, her cheeks darkening just a bit as she quickly dropped her arms. “That uh, that works.” She nodded a few times too many, looking away. “Best I can get I guess, huh?” Bending over to pick up her notebook, she chewed on her bottom lip, before extending an olive branch of sorts. “I’m going to hit the kitchens for a late night snack. You’re uh, welcome to come along I guess, unless you’ve got some mysterious Night Fae things to do instead.” She didn’t really wait for a response, turning and heading for the stairs. If he wanted, he could follow.
He nodded, then shrugged. "Sure. I may as well." He replied, following her. He really wasn't sure why he was going, in all honesty. He probably shouldn't allow himself to be distracted by her. But there was nothing wrong with a snack. Plus, he was hungry, now that he thought about it. So no. There was nothing wrong with having a quick snack before parting ways.
Miyaki led the way back down the stairs, and then through the halls, taking shortcuts and staying mostly quiet as they walked. She did, occasionally, hum. Soon enough, they reached the double doors to the kitchen.
She pushed one open, holding it for Jin and gesturing for him to enter the empty kitchen. It was dark inside, save for the single Dawn Light glowing in the center of the ceiling, another invention of Aster’s that used light magic as renewable energy.
Jin stepped into the kitchen, looking around. "Hm." Was his only comment. Privately, he thought the kitchen looked nice, and the light was ingenious, but he wasn't going to say that out loud, of course. It wasn't usually best to speak ones mind in the world of the Fae like that.
Miyaki slipped in after him, letting the door fall shut quietly and waiting for her eyes to adjust to the dimness in the corners of the room. She started straight for the refrigerator, her vitiligo/markings catching the light and shimmering slightly. Not as much as they had in the moonlight, but some. She hummed as she riffled through the fridge, pulling out a glass bottle full of milk and a tub of something. “Help yourself to anything here. I’m feeling cocoa tonight.”
Jin nodded, and looked around the kitchen. He finally settled on an apple, as they didn't have any of the Night Fae's customary foods here. Probably because they were the Dawn Fae. He bit into the apple carefully, glancing over at Miyaki for a moment, then away again, leaning his hips against the countertop with a soft sigh.
Miyaki continued to hum as she pulled down a pot, having to stand on her toes and stretch to reach it. She may not have been as small as she could be, but Fae tended to run on a higher height scale than humans. So everything was just a bit out of reach. She set the pot on one of the stoves and poured some of the milk in, adding a cup or two of water before boiling it. "Ta-da." She murmured to herself, returning the milk to the fridge before hopping up onto the counter to wait.
Jin glanced over at her again, studying her carefully for any resemblance to those whom he suspected were her parents. He didn't really care if she caught him watching her; what could she do about it anyway? He sighed softly, shaking his head a little as he ate the apple.
Miyaki didn’t look evil. She looked quite the opposite, in fact, especially now. Smiling softly and flipping through her notebook as she waited for the milk to boil. Normal, if anything, as long as you ignored the markings on her face.
Feeling eyes on her, she looked up, tilting her head as she caught Jin looking at her. “Something wrong? Oh! Do you want some hot chocolate too?”
Jin blinked. "I…sure." he said slowly. He couldn't remember if he had had hot chocolate before. Which was a very strange feeling, and probably meant he hadn't. Coffee, yes. Tea, yes. Hot chocolate? No, in all likelihood. He rubbed his face with a hand and threw the apple core away. "Is it any good?" He asked.
