((Sksksk lemme go edit that real quick))
The smell was overwhelming, and Peggy was on the verge of losing the contents of her stomach. She almost turned and left, but crouched, assembling the suit over her hands to clear some of the rubble away, like that would fix things. It didn't. Taking one last look around the apartment, she shook her head, heading back out into the hall.
Klaus was no where to be found. The only trace of him was the sound of footsteps stomping up the stairwell.
Peggy shut the door quietly, following the sounds of Klaus's footsteps. It was probably better that he hadn't gone in, at least.
He reached the roof and sat down on the edge, Amity peeling away from his body as he stared sadly into the distance. His shoulder hurt like hell, but to be honest, he was happy for it. It served as a distraction of what he just failed to do.
She pushed open the door at the top of the stairwell, stepping out on to the roof and searching for Klaus. She didn't speak when she spotted him, just silently sat down next to him and wrapped her good arm around herself.
"I was too late," he said numbly, putting his hands in his lap. "Couldn't save my own mom from my dad."
She looked over at him, biting her lip as the scene in the apartment flashed through her mind. "It's-it's not your fault, Klaus. She-you couldn't have done anything."
"Yes, I could've." He blinked away a stray tear before it could fully form. "I could've killed him 3 years ago. I let him go."
He let out a sigh through hie nose, repeating, "I could've stopped this."
She reached for his hand, squeezing gently. "Klaus, you can't-you can't blame yourself for this. Absolute shit or not, he's still your father. Killing him wouldn't have been easy."
He shook his head slightly, his face completely blank. It would've been better if he had burst into tears, for his expression was just plain terrifying.
She bit her lip again, turning her face up to the sky. She couldn't do anything, and it hurt. She couldn't turn back time, or bring his mother back to life. The best she had was herself, and that wasn't very good.
"Can we just go back to Stark towers?" he asked quietly, not even looking over at Peggy.
"Yeah. That-that might be best." She let go of his hand and stood, pulling out her phone to text someone quickly, before looking back down at Klaus, tugging a hand through her hair. "Fast way, or subway?"
"Fast, please," he said, his voice barely over a whisper at that point.
The suit formed quickly, and she held out her good hand. "Let me carry you? Cuts the time in half."
He offered no argument, wrapping her up in a bearhug that would keep him from falling.
She activated the jets in her suit, and they were off, Peggy flying as fast as she could to get him away from the apartment building, but being careful not to crash.
Klaus set his chin on her metal shoulder, trying to keep the tears back unti; they reached the tower. That's the only reason why he asked.
Peggy headed straight for the window they'd used to leave once they reached the tower, knowing it was probably the best option. She nudged it open further with her foot and hovered, helping Klaus in when it was needed.
He walked over to the loveseat and sat down like his body wweighed a million pounds, letting his head hand as he mulled over the events that just happened.
She let the suit pull away fully, ignoring the pain in her arm as she sat down quietly next to Klaus on the couch.
"It's weird," he said after a moment, "how it doesn't hurt as much as it should. My own mother, who gave birth to me and raised me, was just murdered and I can't even shed a single tear for her."
"That's…that's shock, I think." She pulled her legs up underneath herself, turning to look at him. "Are you-do you need a hug? Is there anything I can do?"
