“Alexander,” she said, dipping her head in greeting.
“Alexander,” she said, dipping her head in greeting.
“Hi, Alexander. I finished your new gladius. Want me to run and get it?”
“Please do,” Alexander nodded at Cato, he glared at Valerie, “Aren’t you supposed to be working?”
“No, she’s got the day off!” Cato called, walking away. “C’mon, Valerie, I need your help with something in the forges.”
“No no, Ms. Valerie will stay here.”
“Of course,” she called over her shoulder before smiling sweetly at Alexander. “It’s alright - I know your godly parent wouldn’t help you with remembering my schedule.”
Alexander furrowed his eyebrows and glared at her even more.
“No, but I really, really, need her help! She’s the one who placed your new gladius in its protective casings. I trust her with that. So I need her to find it. C’mon, Valerie.”
“Ugh fine, hurry up.” Alexander growled, morons.
She waved to him and ran after Cato. At his side, she whispered, “I didn’t do that.”
“No duh,” Cato whispered back. “My plan is, the heat overwhelms you, etc, etc, and bam! You are freeee!”
“Thanks, but I’m not going to ditch you with him,” she laughed. “Nightmare man.”
“Yeah, well. At least he’s not praetor. Yet.”
“Is he trying for it this year?”
“I think so, power-hungry moron that he is,” Cato said seriously.
She sighed and paused for a moment before continuing moving. “So where’s this gladius that we’re getting?”
“In the forge. I finished it weeks ago,” Cato said, checking over his shoulder to make sure Alexander wasn’t listening. “It’ll be buried in there somewhere.”
“Oh, alright then,” she said, trying to ignore the bolt of fear that swept through her. Get it together, it’s controlled…
“You can, uh… just stand right inside, if you want? I know its kinda… cramped, in there. Most people don’t like it, so, um… that’s fine, if you want,” Cato said nervously, seeing the look that crossed Val’s face. Please don’t chop my head off, he thought.
“I think I’ll do that,” she said hastily.
“Okay, sounds good,” Cato said, exhaling a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding.
They reached the forge and Valerie sat down on a nearby rock as Cato went inside to get the gladius.
Cato wandered in, deciding to take his time. He walked past rows of half-completed helmets, broken swords, crooked knives, fancifully decorated sheaths, and a war vest fitted to the War elephant. Once he reached the back, Cato pulled an ordinary gladius from a pile of about twenty, running his finger along the blade. I hope this works.
//I’m thinking somethin bout a cursed blade or somethin, Luce, and then bam no more evil guy
//yo you planning to stab Alexander???
