Gave them an arc from major depressive to finally happy and okay and then I killed them by making them sacrifice themselves for everyone they loved.

Anyone ever make their character terminally ill, then have them die in an accident or a fight instead? Because I've now done that twice in different stories…

I made a girl watch the guy she loved have his throat slit by the girl's mother. The vile woman then pushed the kid off a cliff and tore his body apart with her claws when the turned into a giant snow leopard. The girl sobbed by his remains for an hour.

Yeah, I scrapped the first one that had that. Well… actually I finished it, but it was sort of fanfiction (like I took the world, and put my own characters in, in a different time period). And something similar happened. He knew he was going to die soon, so he just sacrificed himself. The other one I have planned is going to be much more abrupt. I'm thinking of having his best friend watch helplessly as he gets shot in the chest, then as he rushes in to try and save him (there's healing magic, he's sure he can get him help in time), he yells at his friend to save himself and gets shot in the head and killed instantly.

What's even worse than one of my good characters getting shot in the chest?
The love of his life watching it happen and not being able to do anything about it :')

I have a schizophrenic character and wrote her a terrible backstory.
She lives in an asylum because she has frequent hallucinations, and one day when they're especially bad she gets lost and then another wards rapes her and gets her pregnant. She doesn't realise until late in the pregnancy and she gets punished by the asylum guards because she's pregnant. In labor, in her weakened state, she has a very strong hallucination and the doctors sedate her with something that almost kills the baby. When she wakes she's chained down and has to watch as the doctors put the baby down because the risk of him being mentally ill is too high. Then the dad taunts her until she escapes the place and she now lives on the run

You kidding? That mama bear instinct "You killed my child!" is awesome for any kind of revenge and sympathy!

Yeah I know but I feel terrible. I don't usually go that far with sad backstories

I feel you man. I've only done off screen to faceless characters and threat of in POV in my darkest story. That stuff is too rough for me. At least graphic.

I get that. But it works with lt story and was almost inevitable with the way my story was going

I would advise a short non-graphic memory to explain it all. Get the point across. And move on.

What's wrong with real world? It's their story anyway, they can do whatever they want and what they feel is right.

I don't romanticise. That's one thing I cannot do. Real-world is how it works and the only people who'll read this are people who are old enough to understand not everything is cupcakes and roses

In my DND campaign, I ((accidentally)) gave my favorite NPC an incurable disease that will absolutely kill him in three days.

Bro, Jensen, I’m not like, hating on them for having something so real world, I personally just don’t do it often (I’ve done it before and regretted it, actually). So it was just me an my opinion getting in the way.
