I kind of feel bad for one of my characters. I don't know if I did him already, but here goes:
My character Coallen was only happy until he was ten.
At twelve, he wasn't abandoned by his parents, per se, because they still fed him if he showed up at their door, and acknowledged that he was their child, but they essentially treated him like he was a stranger and a bad influence on his own younger siblings because he was more of a gearhead than an academic, and they desperately wanted scholars in their family (Coallen's three younger siblings filled this mold, hence why they enjoyed all the benefits of being in a settled family.)
At fourteen, he joined a rebellion and became an assassin, which is why he doesn't really feel any guilt after killing someone. He's died several times (yes, died; he implanted something in his heart which brings him back to life).
The ONLY PERSON he ever cared about past the age of twelve in his teenage years was his younger brother Madigan, who was the softhearted boy that always knew how to make him feel better. Unfortunately, Madigan, in his hero's worship of his bitter, mentally scarred elder brother, became a killer too, and when Coallen switched sides to the Empire of my story, he tried to convert Madigan too because life would be empty for Coallen without him. Madigan thought that Coallen was being coerced into trying to talk him over and accepted death instead, which threw Coallen into two years in which he did nothing but grieve and refuse help for his post-traumatic stress, hating himself one day for not successfully talking over Madigan, hating the world for taking Madigan from him the next.
So he becomes friends with the head lord of the story, the Magistrate, because he has to cope somehow, and then when a new rebellion breaks out the rebellion kills him (the Magistrate) too, leaving the empire to essentially self-destruct as the rebellion sways more and more people over, and Coallen, who sacrificed everything for the empire, refused to switch sides again and ultimately died because of that resolution, that desperate hope for just one thing to be constant in his life.

@Leiko

I Killed them all.

Ooohhh how?

All of them are the children of death, life, pain, love, fear, birth, good, evil, and the grimm reaper. they have to be killed to be with people like them.

Well, one of my characters ended up kidnapped. Said kidnapper ended up knifing him in the left eye and cutting off his penis. The good thing is that his penis ended up sort of coming back to life after he gained superpowers, but as a ghostly thing. He now keeps it in a box under his bed.

Hello! This is my first addition to this discussion and I would like to contribute by sharing how I permanently scarred one of my characters

-His parents were part of the Russian mafia and they tried to escape to Canada after his younger sister was born. When he was 14 he came home from school one day to discover that both of his parents were tortured and executed in their own home and that his little sister (7 at the time) had been strangled and shot as well. Nobody was convicted of their murder. He was put into the foster system and ran away from 3 abusive families in 2 years. Eventually he was sent to a couple in Amsterdam who were very good to him and loved him very much. One year later, right when he started to consider them family, they were killed in a car crash and he was sent back to Canada to attend University a year early.
(This definitely isn't as detailed as it could be but I did not create my characters to write a novel with)

Here's a list of all the horrible things I've done to a character. I can't choose which one's worse. XD

  • A bubbly slave gets his face blown up all because he went sight-seeing in the balcony. But the misery doesn't end there. He also gets amnesia so he forgets about everybody he's known except for his nemesis. Not to mention, he becomes friends with his nemesis who continues to tangle him up in conspiracies and secret plans not remembering the fact she ruined his life.
  • A child gets his home raided and was separated from his family because of his species. He gets transported to a place where people of his kind get abused. There, he is forced to fight for better treatment for 5 years.
  • The same character who I listed above this one. Except, instead of a child, he's now an adult. Years after breaking out of the abuse house, his friends force him to kill his son. And so he throws his son into the river. This actually affects him super, super deeply knowing that he's the one who left his loved one behind.
  • A happy-go-lucky little girl loses her parents. After that, she gets adopted into a large family consisting of one dad and probs like 10 babies, she loses her adoptive father and almost all her adoptive siblings in a forest fire. But the next day, she gets amnesia.

sniffs Whhhyyyy do I have to torture my characterssss…

That is one interesting story, you have me intrigued…

One of my characters has this horrible disease which basically makes her sweat blood, and is super, super painful. Add a dead mom and constant nightmares, you get a very traumatized girl. Then, she has to rule three dimensions, so isn’t allowed to show any of that trauma. And she is stuck with the mentality of a sixteen year old.

Cool! Like in the Masque of the Red Death!!

Lucas runs after his girlfriend after she got kidnapped and he gets blinded by her kidnapper. He wanders through the forest before finding the Autumn Court, and finds out that his mother is a faery, and he's thought his whole life that fae are wicked and awful.

Copper, I think. He got hurt, went into a coma, and because of a magical artifact, he became part monster. He still has full control, but lives in constant fear that one day, he's wake up with blood on his hands. Also, his best friend became his arch-enemy and the only friend he got after that was brutally murdered. AND ALSO, he was already really poor so all the medical bills put him into deep debt. He isn't even the main character c:

I think the worst thing I've done to my character is creating him in the first place. As in, when he was a child his father tried to have him and his sister executed, before that he was abusive, their mother pretends they don't exist. Oh and when he's ten he gets caught in the middle of a mass slaughter, that includes watching his parents slaughtered in front of him. And to keep his little sister safe he has to either die, or join the army. (AKA the people that just committed mass murder) Having just promised his sister that he wouldn't die he joins them so he can keep his promise. Turns out this army is run by a woman who is slowly going insane and power crazy. He is stuck in her army for over thirty years before crazy general lady is finally killed. In that time he was forced to kill children burn villages, fight the people that are the good guys, several times he get's captured and tortured to info, which he won't give. Oh and his little sister? She spent six years alone, waiting for her brother to come back. But wait there's more. When the brother does finally get out of the bad guys army, he is instantly thrown into the good guys army where he spends two more decades fighting for them. In this time he loses an eye and loses a brother. (The man his sister married) He continues on with his life constantly being thrown into wars left and right. Until Finally he fights a battle which mortally wounds him with a blow to the heart, and he dies. But what's the worst thing about all of this? He never got to fulfill his promise to his sister. He also dies miles from home so he doesn't even get to be buried where he belongs. And also no one knows that he died until a month and a half later.
