Clove scowled. "You do not know story. You not judge."

"Never did. Just making a statement."

"Hmm." Clove flexed her fingers, then mused, "This Vanguard of yours…"

"Is none of your business, if you don't know it," he cut in, a little more bite in his voice than he meant.

She shrugged. "I might of lied unintentionally. Explain Vanguard in roughest terms, and I explain something you want to know."

"Group of demi-gods that are training to fight a titan or some shit. Kinda look over all realms, I think."

Clove tapped her lips. "Hmm. I have heard of them. Not with Vanguard name. Chosen Ones. Demigods, gods, elves, and others. More legend and myth than real." She raised a brow at Runner. "You meet Golden Huntress?"

He nodded, rubbing his nose. "Yeah. I'm not the biggest fan of her at the moment."

"Hmm. My friend fan. She work for Mafia. Make money for many. Including Russian Mafia." She twirled her finger in the air. "She fascinates. She…." She tried searching for the English word for shapeshifter. "Dragon girl? Change skin, no?"

His face darkened, and he rubbed the dragon tattoo on his left arm. "Yeah. Tessie."

She narrowed her eyes. "Hmm. I see. What you want to know? I make promise, I keep."

"I want to know if they're still following me."

She gave him an incredulous look. "How I should know!?"

"You asked me what I wanted to know. I never expected you to, but it was worth a shot."

She muttered something in Russian under her breath. "Still owe you. What else?"

"Owe me for what?"

"I demand answer you not want give. So I give answer you demand."

He tilted his head. "What question did you ask?" Understanding broken English was not his strong suit.

She sighed, frustrated. "I want know what Vanguard is. You say no. I offer deal, you say yes. I owe you answer in exchange."

"Ohhhh, I see." He frowned, thinking hard. "'How do I stop those cards?"

She thought. Her Caretaker training hadn't really touched on the subject of the cards very much, only that they were easy access to Runes and magic for nonmagic users. "Runes are… difficult. Minds of their own. To use Runic, you must know Runic." She glanced sidelong at him, inhaling some more smoke. "Temple can teach some, if chosen. I can teach, too. If, chosen."

He shook his head. "I'm not looking to stay in one spot for too long. But thanks, anyways."
