SEETHROUGH; a dystopian novel
People are dying and the authorities choicely ignore it all, so everything is left in the hands of teenagers. As usual. Nagi Lupin, Cassidina Morshe, and Falkor Winston. They could be a recipe for disaster. But maybe, just maybe, they could achieve something...
Dystopian
Science was advancing, leading to raised ambitions and the reveal of many people's true colours. Among those was a group - known as Et Seminibus in Hoc Mundo - that aimed to bring humanity to its knees before them.
Although the group's sinister idea was to create a disease of sorts to keep the population under control, there were also other forces at work. Sea levels were rising and some people believed that could spell an end to organized society (although all were considered eccentric).
Centuries pass and both outcomes end up happening. The disease is fully activated and nearly impossible to cure unless one were to get very specific help, although the group is much smaller than it was in the beginning. Very few infected with the disease can survive. The water levels have risen, but not as much as was speculated. Society has become more divided, but only physically. Advancements in digital devices have led to increased communication with people far away, but direct interaction from person to person seems rather scarce.
[Uncanny Abilities; in the order of their documentation/mentions]
-Cassidina Morshe: Fire; Elemental type ability; the user can summon their ability at will when emotionally stable, but can easily lose control with their emotions. Her fire is not necessarily strong, but she might summon small fires on accident. Her body temperature, which already runs higher than usual, can also raise to temperatures that will cause burns on content. She does not have much fine control, though.
-Nagi Lupin: Lightning; Elemental type ability; the user has moderate control over their ability and can summon small bolts at will, but in high-tension moments they lose control and can cause anything from electric shocks to lightning storms.
-Falkor Winston: Light; Elemental type ability; the user doesn't have much control over his ability but he is working on it, at this point in time he can sort of bend light and do certain things like cloak himself or other things for a small amount of time. When he gets emotionally overwhelmed he disappears.
The laws of physics in this universe are mostly the same as ours, but the existence of monsters can alter it. Some have properties that can change how gravity works. The abilities of certain Uncannies may do this as well as other things.
Most people are normal. However, certain individuals- sometimes referred to as an Uncanny- are born with certain powers. There are different types of Uncannies. Some are elementalists, with control over a certain element (water, fire, wind, earth, shadow, light, metal, etc.). Others can work with the mind, like illusions, telepathy, or other related things. Some abilities are more powerful than others and some people have more than one ability, though most Uncannies only have one.
The abilities that Uncannies are born with are often thought to be a result of either the parent getting the deadly virus or the child (at a young age) and surviving. Most adults cannot become Uncannies, but a few have.
Uncannies' existence is a very closely guarded secret.
They have far more advanced technology; at this point in time, we have not fully developed them but we have a short list for now.
[ A list of relevant technologies ]
Egliphter - intercom-type thing
Liph - phone-type thing
METROcube - transportation in flying glass boxes that use your METROband as a passport/keycard
METROband - a talking band that the wealthy own that is like an Alexa on their wrist
Liphbooks - holographic computer, visible only to the user unless shared or projected
Tax - a tab on a liphbook
The main inspiration was an assignment; we were meant to create a dystopian story about saving the environment, but we got carried away with it and the universe continued to expand long after the assignment "ended".
Another influence would be the Percy Jackson series; the Uncannies were originally demigods until I (Nyx) updated that a bit to make things a bit more... original.
This story is still a work in progress, so certain aspects may adapt and change.
