The Wolves were blind, so I didn’t have to hide, and they didn’t have a sense of smell. The only senses they had, really, were probably taste and touch as well as incredible hearing. These creatures hunted by sound, and were skilled at doing so. They could hear a whisper from miles away, and they were so fast that they could be there seconds after the noise was made.

The cat didn’t even purr as I continued to walk towards home. We were probably about halfway there when it all went wrong.
I stepped on a twig.
The sound pained my ears, but I didn’t focus on that. I started running, as softly and quietly as I can, and felt my heart thumping wildly as I heard the howling begin.

The Creatures have been around since an experiment (involving genetically modified dog) right after WW1, when Scientists wanted to create a biological weapon, in case of another war. Well, as always, things went wrong. They killed off all of the creatures that escaped, but until later, no one realized that the Creatures had bred with Wolves. The population of the Wolves grew over time, and they largely stayed in forested areas in the U.S. like Montana, Wyoming and such. They had killed humans before, but no one lived to see them, and all of the attacks were blamed on real wolves. But, in the year of 2016, their population grew. They started to spread, and left the densely forested areas filled with creatures they fed off of, to places with a larger population of humans. That's when it got bad. In Spring of 2017, they had spread over the entire country, as well as Canada and South America. The American government had started to build Sanctuaries out of Steel laced with Limestone, a substance that was Fatal to the Wolves, as it killed them instantly when they touched it. There was no explanation as to why this affected them, but the Government didn't care. Because it worked. The Wolves also couldn't swim, so Sanctuaries were built of seven-foot Steel and Limestone walls, surrounded by a deep moat of water with a retractable bridge. There were multiple across the country of America, but since about 99.60% of North America's population was killed off, and a good chunk of people that were alive were undocumented or didn't want sanctuary, it wasn't necessary to build more than 400 Sanctuaries, housing up to 4,000 people at a time.
The story takes place in the summer of 2017.
