The world the book takes place in has fallen to ruin. An old awakened power (dragons? Four horsemen?) was awoken they couldn't control it. People were cursed to fight this power forever however. The accursed.

A fantasy world (including magic, weapons and all that good stuff)

Starting at the point of the fall, the awakened power spun out of control and wiped the world clean. All in the name of a twisted religion. The first king was left alone, surrounded by the ruins of his fallen kingdom, his fallen empire, cursed to walk the ruined world for eternity unable to die by his own hand and with no one left to kill him. His great-sword trailing behind him. This continued for hundreds of years while in distant lands, an empire grew, taking the unclaimed land. Until they too fell to the power. The few who survived went to study what little they could in the ways of magic and war. They had to rebuild what was lost. The duty fell to a young apprentice warrior who, after being caught stealing or something, was cast out to find this power and destroy it. For he would be exiled into the land of the accursed if he did not return with proof. The story starts with him wandering into the ruined Kingdom of elytri, walking up to the palace where he comes face to face with the old king, ready to fight.

Magic in this world comes from one's own strength of will. Magic comes under four categories:

Elemental- pyromancy and other stuff
Life- restoration, curing diseases, taming animals and stuff with plants
Death-necromancy and controlling the dead [especially rare]
Mind- telekinesis, reading minds, that kind of stuff

Each "mage" only has the ability to draw strength from one of four categories that they are born to. The chance of this happening is random, not genetic. The more powerful one is the stronger their character and willpower. Unfaltering determination and drive will mean great power whereas a timid coward would only be able to draw out only the most basic reserves. So the first could burn a forest to ashes and the other could just about kindle wood.

Technology is limited in the ruined world, metalwork is limited so weapons aren't as illustrious as one might think. They can be enchanted however. Technology in the ruined world is mainly just basic middle age stuff such as wooden carts and horses (sparingly)

In the past world technology was similar but much more abundant and efficiently used. Magic was used very often and was very ingrained into society to be used to work.

Same as earth. Somehow the weather knows EXACTLY when to be dramatic enough for good storytelling.
