Werebeast
A Werebeast is a cursed creature who is forced to transform from a human to a bipedal, half-man half-beast monster over the course of a lunar cycle. A Werebeast can be born from other Werebeasts or turned from a Human.
Werebeasts tend to be called by their beast forms (werewolf, werelion, weretiger, etc) but the collective name is "Werebeast"
A Werebeast appears to be a normal human in their Human form besides a few subtle differences. They have heightened senses, particularly with sight and smell, a higher than average body temperature, and a higher metabolism than normal Humans.
All Werebeasts possess a Human Form and a Beast form. Each Werebeast must deal with a number of physiological changes that comes from being a dual-natured creature.
A Werebeast is a bipedal half-man, half-beast creature while in Beast Form. The Beast form can appear to be any predatory creature, as long as it is bipedal. It can also be an amalgamation of predatory features. The extent of the beastly features displayed differs from person to person. As a species, a Werebeast is often referred to by its beast form, such as a Werewolf or a Weretiger.
A Werebeast is a very healthy creature. Their bodies tend to be at the peak of human performance and they aren't affected by weather or illness. A Werebeast will almost never get sick. They also heal rapidly; a side effect of the gruesome Change. Cuts and bruises disappear nearly instantly, bad wounds and broken bones take mere days to heal, and ordinarily fatal blows can be easily survived.
A Werebeast must deal with stronger animalistic instincts while in Human form. The primal urges of the beast manifest as instinctive reactions a Werebeast must learn to control. This can vary between a number of base instincts such as hunt, kill, protect, mate, claim territory, and more, and the degree varies from Werebeast to Werebeast.
A Werebeast's magic is actually a curse that passes from person to person through the bloodstream. The blood magic curse is potent: one bite or cut from a Werebeast in its Beast form is enough to turn a Human.
The Change is the term used to describe both the act and the process of turning from a Human into a Beast. Once the Change has begun it cannot be stopped or reversed until it is completed, regardless of whether they're going from human to beast or beast to human.
A Werebeast has two kinds of Changes: the normal Change, that a Werebeast has full control over; and a Lunar Change, which is a forced Change that occurs during the full moon of every lunar cycle.
Normal Change: A Werebeast has full control when they complete a normal Change, provided they are in control of themselves and don't black out from their Beast. They will have the urge to do this often, as the Beast itches to be set free from its prisoner of the Human form, but the Human can Change at will and is in control of the where and when. They can remain in their Beast form for as long as they wish or until they run out of energy.
However, a Lunar Change is much different. During the night of a full moon of every lunar cycle, a Werebeast is forced to Change for the duration of the night. Every Werebeast blacks out for a Lunar Change; they lose all control of the Beast and are unable to Change back until the dawn of the next day. This is where the Beast truly becomes a monster, untethered to its Human counterpart, and it is the most dangerous Change for a Werebeast to experience.
A Werebeast will retain most of their human intelligence while in their beast form. They do not become mindless killing machines... unless they lose control. High stress, strong emotion, or injury can cause a Werebeast to lose control to the beast and "black out" until they Change back into their Human form. At this point the Beast is fully set free and can run rampant and out of control.
Changing is an incredibly painful and gruesome experience. Bones break, muscles tear apart, the face and the body elongates, and skin transforms as fur sprouts in its place. It is incredibly painful to endure and it is only thanks to a Werebeast's rapid healing that they are able to survive the process. However, the pain only lasts as long as the Change. Once they are in their human or beast forms, all pain from the Change fades.
A Werebeast must remove all clothing and jewelry on the body immediately before the Change or risk losing the items. When the Werebeast transforms their items won't transform with them. Clothes will shred, earrings will fall out, bracelets, necklaces, and rings will break, etc.
Silver: All Werebeasts have a weakness to silver. It doesn't kill them, but it can cause a fatal reaction. If worn, silver causes an allergic reaction for the Werebeast wearing it. They can break out in a rash or get hives, and if worn for too long will cause the Werebeast to go into anaphylactic shock. If ingested, the silver acts as a slow poison that must be purged from the system. Weapons made of silver will cause more damage than other weapons. None of these are inherently deadly, but can cause massive problems for any Werebeast.
Changing: A Werebeast is very susceptible to injury or death while Changing. The easiest way to kill a Werebeast is to surprise them mid-Change and attack, as they must complete the transformation once it's begun and are powerless in the meantime.
Magic: A Werebeast is affected by any type of magic more strongly than most other species. Good, bad, neutral, or something else, magic is more powerful when used on a Werebeast. There is a huge market for magically-infused goods just for them as a result of this. Magic booze being the most popular.
Non-Magic Influences: Inversely, Werebeasts are unaffected by any human-based influences. Drugs, alcohol, medicines, chemicals, etc. created and used by humans have little effect on Werebeasts unless used in massive doses.
Werebeasts can live far beyond a normal Human lifespan. The blood curse naturally prolongs their lives, but they are not immortal. Werebeasts are still flesh and blood and therefore still grow old and die.
Werebeasts age much slower than regular Humans. While the rate varies from person to person, they typically stop appearing to age in their mid-20s and aging slows to a crawl from that point forward. For example, a 300 year old Werebeast can look anywhere from early 30s to late 50s, depending on the Werebeast.
Someone who is born a Werebeast will always be more powerful and in control of themselves than someone who was turned. They grow up their whole life being a Werebeast, so their adjustment to the curse goes much smoother and starts from their childhood, versus someone who was turned later in their lives.
A Werebeast stops being considered a newborn after 50 years. Once they reach 150 years old, they have full control over their magic and are considered a fully capable Werebeast. Once they reach 500 years old they are considered "old" in Werebeast terms and are referred to as Elders. Werebeasts do not live to be older than 1,000 years old.
Children age as regular Humans, though they will exhibit signs of their werebeast traits: heightened senses such as smell and sight, etc. They will not have their first Change until they hit puberty around 13 years of age. The decelerated aging does not kick in until they're in their mid-twenties.
Humans can be turned into Werebeasts through a bite or a scratch from a Werebeast in its Beast form that is deep enough to draw blood. A Human must be toddler age or older to be turned; it's more likely they will survive the attack.
Werebeasts can only turn Humans while they are in their beast form. Their saliva and claws become cursed. A bite or a scratch deep enough to draw blood from a Werebeast will cause a Human to turn. Most attacks are violent and cause severe wounds.
The human will immediately begin to feel the effects of the curse. They often get a high fever, with chills, aches, and pain from the wound as if it were infected. This will last between three days to a week. Some humans pass out for the whole duration and awake transformed. Others push through the whole ordeal as if they're merely sick and experience the transformation first hand.
Once the curse has fully taken hold, the wound will heal practically overnight into a permanent scar and the newly born Werebeast will wake up starving and with the urge to Change. Some are forced to Change within the first 24 hours to quell the new Beast that shares their mind and body.
However, most newborn Werebeasts won't change for the first time until their first Lunar Change; they quickly learn the normal Change is less painful and preferred over the Lunar Change.
Werebeasts can only be created by being born a Werebeast or turned from a Human. Once someone is born or turned a Werebeast, they will always be a Werebeast. There is no way to become a Human or a different Supernatural creature.
Werebeasts can have children with the following species besides themselves:
The child of a Werebeast and another species will always be the species of one of the parents.
Example: The child of a Werebeast and a Mage will either be a Werebeast or a Mage. There is no such thing as a 'hybrid' species.
A Werebeast can tell other supernaturals apart by their smell. Each species has a unique scent signature and a Werebeast can easily learn them all. Individuals also have unique scent signatures that Werebeasts can tell them apart by.
While the curse can't turn other supernaturals into Werebeasts, Supernaturals needs to be just as wary as Humans when a Werebeast is in their beast form. If a supernatural is bit or scratched by a Werebeast, they can become violently sick as the curse fights against their internal magic for dominance. This illness can be dangerous and lasts anywhere from three days to a week, the length of time it takes to Change a human.
