Balance of Light and Darkness
Every Soul has certain amounts of pure Light Magic and Dark Magic bundled into two "morality cores," similar to the Soul Cores for Elemental Energy. The total amount of Light and Dark energy together is constant between souls, but the balance between the two varies widely from being to being.
The role of the morality cores is to define a being's basest nature and instincts. They are deeply connected to the mind, and viewing the balance in one's soul can offer many clues as to how they might see the world and make difficult decisions. Neither Light nor Darkness should be considered better than the other.
Traits commonly associated with this balance include, with Light on the left and Darkness on the right:
- Extroversion vs. introversion
- Optimism vs. realism
- Thinking emotionally vs. thinking logically
- Prioritizes others vs. prioritizing oneself
- Valuing harmony vs. valuing fairness
- Focus on the big picture vs. being detail-oriented
- Preferring freedom vs. preferring guidelines
The balance of one's soul could be an even split, entirely one element or the other, or anywhere in between. It is by no means the be-all end-all of one's personality, however, and a being with a heavy Light lean may show traits associated with Darkness and vice versa. One may also defy their balance through active effort and, in doing so, shift their soul to something closer to their desired actions, making them more second-nature.
The safest way to alter the balance artificially is to add pure Light and Darkness in small, gradual amounts; if there is too much of one or the other, the cores may push slightly into each other, causing small amounts to cancel each other out until the overflow is corrected. This carries risks of its own, however, from Alibra Syndrome to outright Soul Deconstruction.
