She is an A+ student through and through, currently in high school.
I was born in a small town in California. Due to my dad’s job, we moved around a lot when I was young, and we couldn’t afford plane tickets, so we drove to our new houses. While we were moving too Minnesota, a drunk truck driver crashed into our car. I was only 6 at the time, so when I opened my eyes after the incident and saw the body of the truck driver splayed out on the concrete below me, it was too much for me too bare. Luckily, my family all survived and recovered well from the accident, and we ended up staying in Minnesota permanently.
A few years later my baby brother Yui was born. I was about 10 years old and was very excited when my mom and dad came home with a small baby boy in their arms. He was perfect. I loved him from the second I laid my eyes on him. He was the family's pride and joy. It was on his birthday that tragedy struck.
It was a cool spring day in May 2010. Our house was in the middle of town where we had a small lawn that bled into the main road. There was a lot of traffic on that road. So much that it was almost impossible too go anywhere during the mid-day traffic jam. My family and I were out in our yard having a splendid time. My baby brother had been born two years ago and we were celebrating his birthday. We had invited anyone we could think of, his friends, family, even some of my friends/acquaintances. We spent our time at the party eating cake, laughing, playing tag, and blowing up balloons. It was a blast. My brother opened up his gifts and screamed and laughed. It was a joyous day.
Once the laughter began to fade and families started heading home, tragedy struck. A young calf was following her mother across the street when my mother saw a semi-truck speeding down the road. The driver had been intoxicated, and he didn’t see the young steer in the road. My mother yelled, diving into the street to push the calf out of the way. My dad called 911, but it was too late. She died on impact.
He never talked much after that. He became a cold, lifeless husk. From that point on it was on me to take care of Yui. He became my beacon of hope during the following years. We ended up moving a year later to a small town in Wisconsin. By then I was starting 7th grade.
Currently, I work at the library in town shelving books and volunteer at the health clinic. I want to be a nurse or a doctor in the future, but I don’t know if I’ll ever make it there, seeing how Yui needs me, and my dad won’t take care of him while I’m gone.
