Hanji met his wife Asuka while they were working at the same institution in Ochi, Kaze – the former was a researcher while the latter was a professor. They eventually married and settled down with two children, Kiali and Chikao. The family lived a happy life, though Hanji was often busy with his research.
Unlike his more traditional peers, Hanji openly believed that technology could be used to benefit humanity and advocated for its use. He soon acted on this belief, secretly starting one of the most ambitious research projects in his whole career. Hanji dedicated himself to his research, often staying late nights and weekends at the lab, to his family’s worry. However, Hanji did try to spend time with his wife and children when he could – all the while keeping his project a secret from all but his most trusted colleagues for fear that if word got out, it would bring unnecessary attention and even potential harm to his family.
Despite Hanji’s best efforts to keep his research hidden, word eventually got out. Things came to a head eighteen years later, when Hanji was on the verge of completing his work. The Duskwing Syndicate, eager to get their hands on his technology, attacked Ochi, triggering a battle between them and the Dawnwing Organization Liberators who appeared to defend them. The family was separated in the chaos, with Hanji finding himself alone as his hometown burned around him. Realizing who they were after, Hanji fled with Asuka and Chikao across Kaze to the seaside town of Kyoshi. Without news from his daughter, Hanji could only assume she had died in the invasion. However, in truth Kiali had been saved by the Duskwing Syndicate and joined them as Ashika’s Champion.
Hanji gradually accustomed to his new life with his wife and son, helping them adjust as much as he could. Despite this Hanji never stopped missing his daughter, and a part of him continues to hope Kiali is alive and out in the world somewhere.
