Thomasin Locosta Marrow is the first and only living child of Johanna Marrow and Elias Locosta II. Elias already had a child from an affair with Desdemona Hale named Lycus. Desdemona abandoned Lycus shortly after his birth, thus Johanna was left to fill the role of mother when she married Elias in 1947.
Johanna became pregnant with twins in 1949. In late December, the twins arrived; a boy and a girl, named Thomas and Thomasin. The family was overjoyed, and Elias was smitten with his newborn daughter, often reading to her and sleeping with her on his arms. However, after Elias died under mysterious circumstances on March 1st, 1950, Johanna became incredibly depressed and erratic. On the night of March 29th, Johanna suffered from a bout of temporary insanity and abandoned the twins in a tree within the Anamwood. Johanna then walked off a cliff into the Caill River and drowned. The twins were later found by hikers, though Thomas had already died. The coroner's office strangely ruled Thomas' death to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and ruled out pneumonia, hypothermia or frostbite.
Thomasin and her paternal half brother Lycus were adopted by distant relatives; Lucinda and Estella Owen, and lived with them on their homestead on the East end of the island. The two were the first of many orphans to be reared by the Owen family, with Lucinda raising them as her own. Though many in town loathed the family for their reputation of witchcraft, the family was beloved by certain individuals in town. Mr.Booker, the owner of East Elliott General, held particular fondness toward Thomasin, often allowing her to work the register, eat as much as she liked, and giving her the nickname "Little Maisy". It was decided that the two would attend school with mortal children.
From a young age, Thomasin was noticed to be an animal whisperer, often taking in wounded animals and caring for them. As she grew older, Thomasin was trusted to ride to and from school on her horse Lady, attracting the attention of many in her class. Lycus was upset by the danger of her riding home instead of walking, and insisted Estella send her familiar to watch over her.
At the age of ten and thirteen, Thomasin and Lycus welcomed two more orphans to the Owen Homestead: June and Vivian Owen, Lucinda's grandaughters. June was an infant, with her sister Vivian only four years old. Thomasin took it upon herself to care for the two girls, and, in turn, Lycus continued to watch over his little sister, so that she would not overexert herself in caring for them.
At the age of fifteen, while taking an evening walk near the river, Thomasin was jumped by three older boys armed with switch blades. Calling her a witch and a sinner, the boys cut open much of her face and neck, particularly where she bore a familial port wine stain, so as to permanently scar her. As they attacked her, feathers burst from her back, as the pain had prompted her Encyvial Awakening. They poured hot wax onto parts of her face, and intended to rape her until a bear frightened them away. She stayed at the river's side bleeding throughout the night, too scared to move. Estella found her in the morning, and tended to her injuries, however Thomasin never told anyone what had happened, only that someone had hurt her. Both her and Lycus were pulled out of public school.
Thomasin was homeschooled for a year before starting school at the Earthly Academy of Magickal Learning. It was decided that she would still be home-taught subjects such as algebra or chemistry that she would not learn at EAML, so that she could attend a mortal college if she chose.
During her teen years, Thomasin swore off romantic relationships due to the Marrow Family Curse, and stuck to that vow, only engaging in occasional sexual activity with platonic friends. At the age of sixteen, Thomasin was baptized into the Faith of the Old Gods, though she did not pledge her life to any deity. She completed her education at EAML in 1969 at the age of eighteen, and decided to attend a mortal college.
Thomasin attended university on the mainland, and majored in education and ecology, while also exploring interests such as holistic healing, creative writing, and social structure. In her six years of study, Thomasin became a campus personality, and many came to her seeking spells and cures in exchange for favors. As an encyve, she made it her personal duty to look after her fellow students, protecting them at parties and behaving as a mother figure to many. Though she did not crave the attention her craft brought her, she found acceptance in her university life.
After graduating with a Bachelor's in education and a Master's in ecology in 1975, she moved back home to Elliott Island, where she was employed as an educator at the Elliott Island Nature Center. To this day, she still works there, along with helping her family run the homestead and raise the young children. She finds solace in the outdoors and writing, though she craves for the relationships that the Curse forbids her.
