Aznil was born during The Collapse and abandoned for reasons unknown. A dragon found the newborn crying amongst the rubble of one of the many cities destroyed by the event and decided to raise her as its own.

Knowing that it would do her no good to live an insular life among dragonkind the dragon arranged to have her attend The Crystal River Academy as a student when she came of age. It took Aznil a long time to adjust, learning quickly that her fellow students were not like her and that the life she'd known to that point was not like theirs.

Always preferring the company of animals to that of her peers Aznil often hung around the stables. She offered her help, and was eager to learn about the various animals the school kept for any number of reasons - some were displaced by the Collapse and had nowhere else to go, others were injured and recovering before returning to their proper places, and still more were being kept as resources for their natural sheddings, droppings, or other materials that could be gathered without hurting them were useful to the school.

When she graduated Aznil took over as the stablemaster and teacher of the animal husbandry classes despite her rough nature. She's seen first hand what happens when students disrespect some of the creatures that are kept there and pushed so that only 5th years and above could take the classes as by that age the students would be old enough to know better and the fault would fall to them if they screwed up and got themselves hurt. Too many times has she seen an animal have to be put down for the folly of the students who should be old enough to know better but get off because the school disagrees, and as long as she has a say in it never again.
