"That was a very risky stunt you just pulled, Dewpaw." Duckwing picked Dewpaw up by the scruff and started walking back.
"That was a very risky stunt you just pulled, Dewpaw." Duckwing picked Dewpaw up by the scruff and started walking back.
“You coulda gotten really badly hurt- but I know that’s not what you want to hear right now. So, whatta ya wanna do that’s within Clan territory?” she asked. Coppershine looked at Duckwing. “Maybe you could put him down? He’s been through enough today.”
Duckwing shook his head slightly. "I'm taking him back to camp. He's too terrified to move anyways. Look at him." Dewpaw was indeed still frozen, his tail curled up between his legs.
She ducked down to look Dewpaw in the eyes. “Hey there, I’m sorry you’re scared right now. Nod to me if you wanna head back to camp, shake your head if you wanna just chill here and calm down. Either way is okay with us.” She looked up at Duckwing. “Right?”
Duckwing nodded and Dewpaw hesitated before shaking his head. Duckwing set him down gently. "I… I-I can't go to camp all worked up like this…"
“That’s fine! Let’s just stay here for a minute,” Coppershine said with a smile. “Say, what did you see in the Moonpool last night? I was meaning to ask you.”
"That's… one of the things I'm troubled about. I saw a vision with swarms of bats and hornets destroying everything…" Duckwing looked over at Coppershine nervously, remembering the names of the new kits.
Coppershine returned the nervous look. “Uh, bats and hornets? By chance, have you met your new siblings? And learned their names? Cause I don’t like where this is going..”
Dewpaw nodded. "I know about Batkit, and with our luck, I'm guessing there's a Hornetkit too…" Dewpaw kneaded the ground anxiously with his claws.
“You guessed it, kid,” Coppershine said gloomily. “I don’t know much about this prophecy stuff, but I think that growing up with everyone expecting them to be evil won’t be too good for those kits. What are you and Tawnyleaf going to do about it?”
"We're not sure yet… they're too young to actually do anything right now, of course, so we'll just be keeping an eye on them." Dewpaw sighed and Duckwing nodded.
“Good call,” Coppershine replied. “Think you’re ok to head back to camp, Dewpaw?”
Dewpaw hesitated before nodding and falling back into a silent state. On the way back, he randomly trotted off. Duckwing was nervous at first, but Dewpaw returned a few seconds later with some marigold.
“Nice, bud! Oh, yeah, gimme a second! You just reminded me!” She padded towards where she had buried the mouse and dug it up. “Duckwing, you better catch something fast, cause you’re the only prey I’m seeing right now,” Coppershine purred.
Duckwing rolled his eyes and went into a nearby clearing. A minute later, he returned with a rabbit and kept walking.
Soon, the trio arrived at camp. Coppershine dropped off her mouse in the fresh-kill pile and curled up on a flat stone warmed by the sun.
(( i gotta get some sleep! toodles! ))
Duckwing escorted Dewpaw to the medicine den to make sure he didn't run off and went to eat with Coppershine.
Coppershine munched on a finch, thinking about the vision Dewpaw had described. She saw Duckwing walking over and smiled. “The famed warrior Duckwing, come to eat with me? Oh my Starclan!” she said jokingly. She scooted over to let him lay down beside her.
Duckwing rolled his eyes and grabbed a mouse, flopping down beside her. "Not yet, although that Boneclan warrior isn't likely to forget us soon."
Coppershine’s eyes widened as she thought about their border crossing. “Fox dung. How long do you think it’ll take Eaglestar to find out? Personally, I’d like to keep my fur on my pelt, so hopefully he never does.”
"I'm not sure, but I don't think we'll be in trouble… it's Dewpaw I worry about." Duckwing cast a worried glance at the medicine den. "I wish we could've helped him out sooner. Poor kid's stretching himself far too thin."
Coppershine followed his eyes and nodded in agreement. “No cat should have this much responsibility at his age. But, it seems like he doesn’t want our help. Or anyone else’s for that matter.”
Duckwing nodded, quiet for a few seconds. "Did you see the amount of damage to that clearing?" He asked softly. "You'd have thought there was a bear fight or something."
“I know, right? It’s kinda ridiculous that nobody’s figured it out until now.” Coppershine paused for a beat. “Or maybe they did and can’t do anything to help him stop it.”
