"whoa calm down. I hate that guy. Though we are friends. I owed him and my debt is paid. Now do you want help or not?"

Kate looked from Jay to her mom. Without saying a word, she nodded and sniffed, trying to keep herself composed.
He walked over and first checked Kate's mom's pulse.
Kate bit her lip and watched. "Is… Is she…"
"she is alive." He told Kate.
Kate sighed with relief. "Why won't she wake up then?"
"momentarily passed out maybe. The impact could have jolted her at such a level that it sent her into a short comatose state."
Kate cupped her hands over her mouth. She lowered her hands and breathed out shakily. "How long?"
"shouldn't be too long. And I'm not sure if we should get her out of the car. We aren't sure what kind of injuries she could have." He said slowly.
Kate nodded. When the ambulance arrived, it was just a blur of red and blue lights to her through the layer of tears that clouded her vision. Her chest was tight and it felt hard for her to breathe.
Jay walked over to her and grabbed her shoulders. "It will be fine." He said in a reassuring voice.
She gasped suddenly at his touch, as if awakening back to reality. "It's my fault," she whispered. "If she never wakes up, it's my fault."
"shut up." He said a bit harshly. "It is not your fault and you are going to get in that ambulance as soon as they put her in there. And you are going to watch her at the hospital."
She nodded weakly. "And if… if…" Her lips wouldn't form the words. If she doesn't wake up…
He understood what she was trying to say. "If she doesn't wake up she doesn't wake up. Nothing in your power to help her. But I bet she will be ok, I have a feeling she has been through worse."
Kate nodded again. She couldn't bring herself to speak. The EMTs carefully loaded Maria onto a stretcher and wheeled her to the ambulance. Kate looked at Jay, then to her mother.
"are you going with her." He asked softly then stepped back.
Kate nodded once and ran after the paramedics. "Wait!" she cried. "I'm her daughter!"
Jay stood there and watched.

One of them said something to her and helped her in. She looked back at Jay for a moment before the doors shut and the vehicle sped away.
Jay looked at the sky then breathed and walked away from the scene.
Kate grasped her mother's hand. "Mom?" she whispered.
The woman sitting across from her reached over and touched her shoulder. "Are you alright, hun?"
Kate nodded absently. She was waiting for the near impossible: Maria to wake up.
Jay walked for awhile in a direction. He was going home but decided to go a long way.
When they arrived at the hospital, the staff quickly rushed Maria off, leaving Kate helpless in the waiting room. She sat and put her elbow on her knees and her head in her hands.
Jay thought as he walked. He thought wondering if Kate was ok. If he would be dead for staying out so late (probably not). And other random thoughts that just popped up.
