Marya headed back to her room and ripped open the letter.
Dear Marya,
I'm sorry. I was blinded by the prospect of my own family and I didn't care about yours. I have a million things to say to you. Please just meet me face to face. Or respond. I love you.
-Felix
They were getting shorter. Was Felix giving up? Marya hoped so.
The apocalypse has started.
Gabriel slept soundly, for the most part. It would get worse as the night lingered on..
Marya closed the window curtains and put on her pajamas, yawning and preparing herself to wake up tomorrow. Every morning, she'd forget that they were dead. And it broke her heart when she remembered they were. So Marya collapsed on her bed, tired, but she couldn't sleep.
Time dragged on unexpectedly fast in the nighttime. And at some point just before two, she could hear canine whimpers in Luka's room.
Marya had fell asleep, but the noises woke her up. Rubbing her eyes, Marya walked to Luka's room. "Luka? What are you doing in there? I thought I told you not to make noises while I'm-" she yawned, "-sleeping." Marya's hair was all over the place and she knocked on Luka's door. "Luka, is Basil still whimpering? Make him shut up." Marya yawned again, "Or I'll tell Bakarne."
The whimpers hushed at her voice, and the canine thumped his tail in relief and e,barrassment.
"Basil? Is Luka not treating you well?" Marya opened the door, "Luk-oh. Luka's dead. Basil's dead. Bakarne's dead. Of course. Gabriel?"
His snout poked out from under the bed.
"Wolf form, huh." Marya sat down on the bed, "Please don't change back, I like you better as a dog then naked." she leaned down and pet Gabe's snout. "Scared?"
He emerged his whole head, ears lowered submissively.
"I know you can't talk, but can you howl?" Marya went down on the floor and laid herself on it, "Come out."
"Mm, mm, mm," he whimpered a little, keeping his broad, thick and furry head down, dog-army-crawling to her.
"We're all fine." she scooped him up and put him on the bed before collapsing on it as well. "I thought Luka and Basil were alive. But they're not." silent tears streamed down her face, "I always think they're alive."
The wolf's rough tongue licked off the tears on her face. His clothes were still hanging on the wolf's body, loosely.
"Thanks, Gabe." Marya hugged the wolf. "You're real nice. And you should probably change back. I'll wait." she got up and left the room.
He barked shortly, shook his head, and laid down. In a manner of seconds, he shifted back to his normal self, lying on his stomach across the bed.
Marya knocked, "Done?"
"Yeah," he replied, sitting up to fix his shirt.
"Okay." Marya went in and sat on the bed, with him. "I'm sorry for showing myself while I was weak. Forget you saw or heard anything." her clenched fists were pale. "Just forget all of it."
"Showing weakness isn't always bad," he tried to reason, green eyes glossy with sleepiness. "…makes room for somebody new to come in and fill the hole, I think,"
"I'm a soldier, I can't show weakness." her hands shook, "But I keep finding myself so devastated." Marya sobbed, "I wish they weren't dead. I wish they weren't dead. I wake up, expecting to see them, but they're gone!" her tears rolled down her cheeks, "I want them back.."
"Can I hug you?" He asked in a hushed, patient voice.
