"Oscar, you can turn the cloaking off," Avery directed. She glanced at her two passengers and gave them both a quick smile. "Let's go see what Vaughn's new hideout is, huh?"
"Oscar, you can turn the cloaking off," Avery directed. She glanced at her two passengers and gave them both a quick smile. "Let's go see what Vaughn's new hideout is, huh?"
Vaughn parked and got out of the truck, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder. He glanced back at the other car and shook his head slowly, sighing. He walked up the path, a heavy limp noticeable. He unlocked the door and went inside, leaving it open for them.
(Whoops! Forgot to mention that they'd pulled in behind Vaughn in the driveway… Not necessarily important, but still.)
(Yeah, it’s fine.)
Vaughn tossed his duffel onto a wooden table in the kitchen. He tried the lights but they didn’t work and he huffed sharply, moving over to the small fire place where there conveniently already was wood. He picked up a box of matches and lit one, holding it next to the dry wood until it caught.
Avery climbed out of the car and walked up to the front door of the cabin, not bothering to check back to see if the others were following her. She knocked and walked in, casting a glance around to room she entered.
"Wow. It's pretty nice in here for an abandoned cabin," she stated.
Vaughn flinched slightly from the sudden voice, as he already seemed on edge. He threw a glance over to where Avery was. “It’s not abandoned at all. This place belongs to a friend of mine, her family comes here in the winter. It’s a safe house in case if anything goes south,” he explained, trailing off at the end. He stood and winced, steadying himself on the stone mantle.
It was a decent sized cabin, having two furnished floors. It was mostly wood and rustic seeming stone, and it had a warm feel to it.
Avery cast a glance at Vaughn's injured foot. "Do you want Element to take a look at that?" she asked. "I'm sure she'd be happy to."
“It would be nice, but I wouldn’t use the word ‘happy’ to describe that,” Vaughn muttered. He limped across the hall and into the kitchen, where he took things from his duffel and set them out on the table.
"Can I sit down?" Avery asked suddenly. "I mean, it's not my place, and I don't mean to be rude or anything, I just like to ask. Also, are there cups? And can I get some water?"
(She kinda rambles when she's nervous, if you couldn't tell. Reason for nervousness: she doesn't know what they're going to do about the Flame… Again, not necessarily important, just thought you all might want to know.)
(Alright, it’s good to know.)
Vaughn arched a brow and motioned to a cabinet. “Cups are in there, water is from the tap, and you can sit where-ever,” he said. He sat in a chair at the kitchen table, sorting out various papers that he had thrown in an unorganized manner.
"Great. Cool, thanks," Avery muttered, grabbing a cup and getting herself a glass of water. She made her way to one of the chairs in front of the fireplace and sat down, slowly sipping her water.
Element turned in a circle, and looked at everyone, then at Vaughn. "If you want I can help you repair some stuff." she said, walking to the fire place. "And I need to fix your foot. That one isn't optional." she added.
“Go on ahead,” Vaughn responded, ,waning back in the chair. He picked up a yellow file, the words “Finley M.” scribbled on the front, and he stuffed it back into his duffel. He knew there wasn’t any food around at the moment, so he hoped that his contact would arrive soon with supplies.
After finishing her water, Avery stood and walked back to the kitchen sink to get some more. She sat back on her chair in the living room and took a sip.
"So, does anyone have a plan?" she asked. "'Cause I don't know about you, but I'm not sure if I'm the one who should be making plans. Ya know, seeing as how my last one turned out…"
“We just need to lay low for at least a day or two. I may have left some things behind, and it’s likley they will identify them as mine,” Vaughn said in an annoyed tone. He didn’t like admitting defeat, and this was the closest he had come to being caught.
Element got to work with her healing, and looked up at Avery. "We HAVE to get Jared's lap top no matter what. And I still have some books about it." She said. "Also, I may have somewhere to go around here with more books on the matter."
"I can ask one of my friends to grab the laptop," Avery suggested. "She'll be fast and very careful not to get caught."
Element nodded. "Sounds good."
"Cool. I'll give her a quick call," Avery stated.
She pulled her phone out and dialed a number, walking into the hallway so that they wouldn't hear her conversation. When she was finished giving her friend instructions, she hung up and walked back out.
"She'll be here in a few minutes," she said, sitting back down in her chair. "Or seconds. Depends on how quickly she finds the laptop."
Dylan sat on the floor leaning back, facing Avery. She wore somewhere a look somewhere between humility and humor. He found himself comforted by her presence.
"I won't lie to you, what I've got from our guy is not what you'd call helpful, but I know a few things. I'll fill ya'll in once we've got our laptop."
A knock sounded on the door, and Avery jumped up to get it.
"Thea! You found it! Thanks so much!" she exclaimed, letting a tall brunette in. She wore a suit similar to Avery's, except hers was mostly violet and covered in lightning bolts.
"Guys, this is my friend Thea, who you may know better as Velocity, one of my teammates. Thea, this is Element, Dylan, and the guy who won't want me to tell you his name," she introduced everyone, gesturing to each person as she said their name.
Vaughn got up once Element was done, giving her a quick thank you. “I’ll be upstairs putting my things away. There are a few extra bedrooms, so feel free to stay in whichever.”
He went upstairs and down the hall to the door on the end. He tossed the duffel onto the bed, glancing around. His eyes stopped on the three pictures that were set out in the dresser. One showed him, seemily recent, and a girl with ginger hair, her elbow slung over his shoulders as they both grinned brightly. The second was one of him and another boy with strange red eyes. They seemed to be caught in the act of playing something, possibly football, as they were both sprawled out on the grass laughing. The final one was of the three together, arms around each other in a friendly embrace. He remembered when that was taken. It was last summer, and they had all snuck down to the cabin. Vaughn smiled to himself at the memories and sighed.
Element smiled and took the lap top. "Thank you so much!" she said brightly. "Oh, and I love your suit." she added.
"Oh, thanks!" Thea exclaimed, casting a quick glance downwards. "Avery actually designed it."
Element turned to Avery. "She did a good job!"
