"Great, that's lucky." Mike pushed open the door and waved them in. "Lenny," he called. "Got a bit of patching up for you to do."
An older man with kind eyes and grey hair came over, scribbling something on a pill bottle. "Hey, now, what did you do to these poor young people? Come and sit down, anyone who's hurt."

Pluto hung back a little, subconsciously trying to hide her injured wing. She felt a little dizzy but waited for everyone to move where they wanted to before admitting she was hurt

When Lenny saw her wings, he raised his eyebrows. "Well well! It's been a while since I treated something with feathers." Very gently, he undid the bandages–complimenting Mike's first aid abilities as he did so–and began to examine the injury. "Root damage here. Luckily it looks like the feathers will be able to grow back. What's this congealed dark stuff? It's not blood."

"So it's supposed to be there. I won't worry about it, then." Lenny carefully cleaned the wound and added some salve underneath a fresh layer of bandages. "You'll have to wait until the feathers grow back until you can fly, obviously. Don't stretch the skin around the wound too much while it's healing. Thank-you for sitting still and being a good little patient, unlike most of the hot-blooded idiots I have to deal with around here."

(I'm here for now) Pluto rolled her eyes at Mike. She hoped her wing would heal before too long. Usually large wounds didn't take too long to repair themselves

Mike walked over to the mess hall, where there were still a few lights burning. "Looks like were in luck. The cooks haven't powered down quite yet."
Sure enough, there was still the faint smell of roasting meat and baking bread from the kitchen when they entered. A woman–Mariana–stuck her head out when she heard the door open. She'd changed into a long blue-and white dress that looked like what Viking women used to wear, and her hair was down around her shoulders. She looked very lovely.
"Hey," she called. "Hungry?"
"Yup," Mike replied. "Don't bother fixing anything fancy, just whatever's on hand will do. Thanks."
She nodded and vanished into the kitchen.
"She's a talented woman," Mike remarked, sitting down at the table. "Hunts with the best by day, manages the cooking and chores by night. We were a mess before she came along."

Pluto nodded in confirmation absently. She couldn't shake the feeling that Mike's company was oddly like her…"family" back in Russia. Family that was long dead.

"She was the first lady to apply for a job here," Mike continued. "And she had a rocky start with the rest of us at first. But it's important to have people in camp who think like her. She's solved some problems that would have taken us forever."
Mariana and the man named Vincent came in, carrying dishes of food for everyone. "How's Clay these days?" Mariana asked.
Mike sighed. "No worse, no better. The mystery co-founder showed up, though. Blake. He's a character, I don't know what to make of him yet. None of us could figure out what was strange about him."

Pluto looked down at her hands, trying not to look at anyone too long out of fear of them seeing her eyes and getting freaked out. She also idly wondered why Mariana seemed to look so much like the old mafia boss she used to work for

Mariana considered you, then smiled. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't try to bother you all with talk at this hour. Eat up and get to bed, you must be exhausted. Come on, Vincent, we have dishes to do." They said goodbye and returned to the kitchen.
Mike went back to eating. "She's right. We've got a long day tomorrow." He was silent for a minute, then added, "You seem uncomfortable. Just your wing, or is something bothering you?"
