"Rocky sort of found me, I suppose. He was just out in the streets, and Claus and I found him. He's been Claus and mine for about… probably ten or so years now. He's just been mine for about seven…"
"Rocky sort of found me, I suppose. He was just out in the streets, and Claus and I found him. He's been Claus and mine for about… probably ten or so years now. He's just been mine for about seven…"
Jaidyn looked down, not knowing what to say, instead walking in a companionable silence.
"Has it really been that long?" Lucas thought quietly aloud to himself, looking down at Rocky. "You don't act like you're old, do you boy? You're just the same puppy you've always been."
Jaidyn smiled softly.
I can't believe Claus and mom have been dead for seven entire years… Rocky barked softly, rubbing his head against Lucas's hand. He seemed to know what Lucas was thinking about, and knew the kind of emotions that were stirred up by them. "So…" Lucas cleared his throat quietly. "Where's the shelter?"
(Seven years? Wow that's a long time.)
"Right down the road. Wanna race?"
(Well, Lucas is 16 rn, and Claus died when they were 9)
"Er… race? I'm not too good at racing, but if you want to…?"
Jaidyn shook her head. "If you don't want to race, we don't have to."
Lucas shrugged. "I'm willing to, I'm just not a very competitive person in general. I'm the one who's happy to win, but doesn't really care if they lose because they can just go read."
"Yeah, I'm not competitive either. I just like racing because it's fun and I get to run with Tucker." Tucker barked happily in agreement.
Rocky trotted along beside Lucas, looking over at Tucker when he barked. "True… Rocky's getting old and he doesn't run as much anymore. Bet you're still in your prime though, hmm Rocky?" Lucas glanced down at the dog.
Jaidyn laughed lightly.
"Rocky's been my companion for most of my life. He's always been there for me, and he's very loyal. I know if the need arose, he would risk his life for me, and I for him."
Jaidyn nodded.
Lucas cleared his throat quietly. "So… um, are we almost there?"
Jaidyn stopped. "Right here." She said, grabbing the glass door and pulled it open.
"Nice." Lucas walked inside and looked around in awe. It was amazing how much fit comfortably and neatly in the small space. He soon made his way over to the dog cages on his left.
Jaidyn took a deep breath as she walked over to the cats and picked on up.
Lucas knelt down beside the cage of a shy dog. It was the one cage that didn't have people around it. "I wonder why you're all alone…" Lucas said quietly to himself, stroking the dog through the bars of the crate.
Jaidyn smiled down at the tiny kitten she was holding. Tucker looked a little jealous. Jaidyn laughed.
Rocky sniffed at the dog in the cage, which returned the gesture. It was a cavalier king charles spaniel, and a beautiful one at that. She seemed very sweet, but timid.
Jaidyn walked over to Lucas. "What'd you find?"
"A lone soul in the midst of chaos." He said quietly, letting the dog lick his fingers.
Jaidyn bent down to get a better look at the dog. The kitten in her arms seemed to like her. Jaidyn smiled. "Hey girl." She whispered, gently petting the dog's head. "Hey…"
Her tail thumped softly on the floor of the cage. "There was no one around her… I know how it feels to be alone, and I couldn't just leave her on her own." A worked took the cavalier out of the cage and handed her to Lucas.
